Meet at the Lake Parking Lot.
Kayak Course By: Kelly
0-100 Kayaking Group/ Hiking Group.
$15.00 per Course. Courses will start March 19th 2014 @ 5:00 P.M.
This course is taught at one of our local lakes @ Colonel Francis Beatty Park
4330 Weddington Road, Matthews, NC, NC
and teaches the basic skills of flat-water kayaking. Topics include forward and reverse strokes, sweeps and self-rescue skills. Old and new kayakers welcome in this course. Kayaking is a great way to explore the outdoors.
We want to offer this two class course to all people that want to have the class at a price they can afford. The course will be $15.00 per course.
In any class, you will be supplied with safety equipment, paddle, and will be in a recreational(or similar) kayak.
This class is perfect for beginner or a kayaker who wants review of the basics. The class starts out on with instruction on land, where you’ll learn the parts of the boat, how to get in and out of the boat, how to hold the paddle, and the importance of a properly fitting PFD. You will have an hour more of your lesson in the water where you’ll learn:
stopping the kayak
Sweep stroke for turning
If you dont have a kayak, I will bring an extra to share.
Goal: This informal meetup is for all levels(advanced paddlers come share your knowledge) and will give you many things you need to know to safely and confidently paddle on protected waters in a kayak, even if you've never paddled before.
We will cover some of these topics:
PFDs (life jackets) and spray skirts. Emergency stop stroke.
Paddle basics and proper position. Bracing.
Forward and backstrokes. Sweep stroke to turn. Edging(a circle). Parts of a kayak. Sculling to move sideways. Getting in and out of the kayak with grace. Draw stroke to move sideways. Adjusting the kayak to fit you correctly. Stern rudder. How to launch your boat. Wet exit discussion. Spinning in place. Wet exit practice (optional*).
How to load your kayak(garage door opener!!) on your car(my favorite).
(*A "wet exit" is getting out of a capsized kayak...not as scary as you might think. We'll walk you thru it.)
What to bring: bathing suit, kayak, paddle, pfd. Optional: skirt, dry top, wet suit, booties etc.
And any of your concerns or questions.
