This exciting 10-week West African Drumming Course will focus on techniques, rhythms, and arrangements for djembe and dunun drums. Students will learn the rhythmic structure of drum music from Guinea, Senegal, Mali, and Gambia, among others, and practice traditional arrangements in an ensemble format.
Using methods and rhythms from West Africa as a foundation, students will learn:
The correct technique to expand the range of sounds and timbre out of the drum;
The history of traditional rhythms and arrangements and the cultural role of the djembe and dunun;
The ability to play dynamic, interlocking rhythms in an exciting musical ensemble!
Finally, we will explore the new music of Gem Foli - "the voyage rhythm" - a new movement of drum music infusing African and Brazilian styles with Funk.
