August Meetup [Sci-Fi & Fantasy]: Douglas Adams' 'The Hitchhiker's Guide' (1979)

The theme this month is Sci-Fi & Fantasy and the winner is:

Douglas Adams' 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' (1979)

This was nominated by one of our organizers Anne and here's why:

"This is possibly my most loved book ever, and more than anything else I've ever read I feel it really is one of those books everyone should read in their lifetime. I laughed, I cried and I jumped for joy, simply it's awesome! :)

Please give me an excuse to read this book again :)

The Guardian info is as follows:

"Originating as a BBC radio series in 1978, Douglas Adams's inspired melding of hippy-trail guidebook and sci-fi comedy turned its novelisations into a publishing phenomenon. Douglas wrote five parts from 1979 onwards (the first sold 250,000 in three months), introducing the world to Marvin the Paranoid Android, the computer Deep Thought, space guitarist Hotblack Desiato (named after Adams's local estate agent) and the Guide itself, a remarkably prescient forerunner to the internet."

As an experiment this month we have restricted the RSVP settings so members will only be able to RSVP one month before the actual date of the meet-up.

Don't worry we will still nominate & vote well in advance to give everyone a heads up about the book we will be reading.

Enjoyed hearing everyone's views. Given that I was not a fan, a good evening discussing the book and its possible messages made the read worthwhile.

The two mice looked at each other, then back to the flashing red data streams on the giant screens."What is that" ? said one, "the Chiswick Book Night " replied the other.

In a corner, a mouse at a console quietly sobbed...................:-))

Sorry, I have to bail tonight, though that's prob a good thing really as I read the book many years ago, didn't have time to re-read it for this, so it's all a bit of a blur as to what on earth (or space) actually happened in it!

It's difficult to refuse a plan where I go home with Richard Armitage... But I fly to Cyprus on Saturday! Any chance you can do Friday night? Trade you for dollhouse season 2...
