February Meetup [CRIME]: John Buchan: The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915)

We might be in the mood for love but February's theme is Crime and the winning book is....

John Buchan's 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' (1915)

Nominated by Charlotte Lee and here's why:

"I would like to read John Buchan's The Thirty-Nine Steps, as i have meant to do so for some time. Perhaps others might too? And if Hitchcock took to it, it can't be too bad! The slightly lucklustre Guardian precis (given it makes the 1000 top books) is:

"Buchan tossed off shockers such as this in the intervals of a highly successful public career. This yarn introduces his series hero, Richard Hannay, and is set on the nervous eve of the first world war. Hannay, a mining engineer, returns from Africa to London where he encounters an American, Franklin P Scudder, who has uncovered a German spy ring, the Black Stone. Scudder is murdered. Hannay is suspected and goes on the run to Scotland — pursued by British police and Hun assassins. He resourcefully cracks the "thirty-nine steps" code and thus saves England. The novel was filmed by Hitchcock (who introduced romantic interest) in 1935." JS - Guardian Website http://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/jan/18/1000-novels-crime-part-one"

Thanks for organising guys. A good book which was, as ever, more enjoyable as result of good discussion and other views. Looking forward to Roy next month.

I too am very sorry for the late notice, but have been battling cold & fever all day. Meetings spent in air-conditioned rooms have made it worse. A good read and saw the play as well. Shame, as I was looking forward to it

Maybe the curse of the newbie but I will also miss my first planned group. One of my children was taken ill at nursery so I shall only be discussing The Gruffalo and We're going on a bear hunt this evening, unfortunately. Apologies.
