Discover the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel in Brooklyn

This location is shown only to members

This meetup is closed to new RSVPs now. Everyone on the "yes" list has payed the deposit. All the others have been moved to "no".

I once read about "The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel Tour" in Brooklyn in TONY-Magazine and thought this might be a nice event for the 1001 group. Join me to discover this abandoned Long Island Railroad tunnel on April 19th at 11 a.m.!

I made a reservation for 20 people, but might be able to increase the number closer to the date.

Here's what it says on the Brooklyn Historic Railroad Association's website (which also includes interesting links for further reading and pictures of recent tours), http://www.brooklynra... :

"The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel. This tunnel was built in 1844, under a City of Brooklyn Street. It is a half-mile long and accommodated two standard gauge tracks. The tunnel was built in only seven months, using the cut-and-cover method; only hand tools and primitive equipment was utilized in its construction.

It was built to provide grade separation for early Long Island Rail Road trains that lacked brakes good enough to operate on city streets. The tunnel eliminated vehicular and pedestrian traffic conflicts and delays."

The tunnel is open to the public once a month. The narrated walking tour led by Bob Diamond, who rediscovered the long forgotten tunnel in 1980, lasts approximately an hour and a half.

The tour meets at the old Independence Bank building (now a Trader Joe's grocery store) at the SW corner of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street, under the clock.

Please wear Sneakers or Boots (no high heeled shoes). And bring a flashlight.

After the tour, please join me for authentic German food at "Schnitzelhaus" in Bay Ridge. Learn more here:

Thanks for the cool pics, Erik. They turned out really well, considering how dark it was down there. :-)

What a wonderful idea! The tour guide Bob Diamond was very informative and knoledgeable about the history of Brooklyn and how neighborhoods were developed. He offered good humor and an extensive and very desciptive explanation of how he discovered the Atlantice Avenue Tunnel!

It was definitely one of the most informative and unique meetups I've ever been on. My guest told his friends and family about how much of a great time he had.

The story of the tunnel and its rediscovery was fascinating. Plus I got to climb down a manhole! The tour started late because we were waiting for the entire group to get down into the tunnel, but that was obviously due to the tour group itself and not our intrepid organizer!
