I once read about "The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel Tour" in Brooklyn in TONY-Magazine and thought this might be a nice event for the 1001 group. Join me to discover this abandoned Long Island Railroad tunnel on April 19th at 11 a.m.!
I made a reservation for 20 people, but might be able to increase the number closer to the date.
Here's what it says on the Brooklyn Historic Railroad Association's website (which also includes interesting links for further reading and pictures of recent tours), http://www.brooklynra... :
"The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel. This tunnel was built in 1844, under a City of Brooklyn Street. It is a half-mile long and accommodated two standard gauge tracks. The tunnel was built in only seven months, using the cut-and-cover method; only hand tools and primitive equipment was utilized in its construction.
It was built to provide grade separation for early Long Island Rail Road trains that lacked brakes good enough to operate on city streets. The tunnel eliminated vehicular and pedestrian traffic conflicts and delays."
The tunnel is open to the public once a month. The narrated walking tour led by Bob Diamond, who rediscovered the long forgotten tunnel in 1980, lasts approximately an hour and a half.
The tour meets at the old Independence Bank building (now a Trader Joe's grocery store) at the SW corner of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street, under the clock.
Please wear Sneakers or Boots (no high heeled shoes). And bring a flashlight.
After the tour, please join me for authentic German food at "Schnitzelhaus" in Bay Ridge. Learn more here:
