Flying the Bay Tour @ West Valley Flying Club @ PAO

Title: Flying The San Francisco Bay Tour

Topic: How to safely fly the San Francisco Bay Tour.

Date and Time: Wednesday, April 9, 2014 , starting at 7:30 pm PDT

Speaker(s): Max Trescott, CFII

Brief Description: Flying the Bay Tour is fun, but it makes sense to plan ahead before your launch on your tour. There are many considerations, including the routes and altitudes to be flown, ATC communications, required clearances, and weather issues. You'll always want to consider in advance any alternatives, in case you're unable to execute your original plan. There's been at least one fatal accident that occurred while flying a S.F. Bay Tour, and you'll learn the details of what went wrong on that flight. The seminar also shows photographs of major landmarks on tour and provides a brief history of some of them that you can share with your passengers when you fly the tour.

Location of Seminar: West Valley Flying Club
1901 Embarcadero Rd.
Suite 100
Palo Alto, CA 94303

For those who were there yesterday... I have a question. When we talked about the accident where the pilot flew below the marine layer, and someone mentioned "declare an emergency"... If you were in their shoes, at what point would you have declared and to whom?

If I had inadvertently become stuck under an overcast I would have requested help long before turning inland. When the conditions deteriorated to IMC I would have used the E word.

I have flown a Great deal inand under june gloom at the coast. Using the E word is not going to fly the a/c for you. I have slowed down so your turn radius is smaller and never ..never go anywhere you cannot see a out. after I got my insterment rating I was living at a airport without a aproach. I have flown down the river to take a look..knowing the lay of the land very well. and aould not get into the airport and clime straight ahead into a overcast I knew was only 1000ft thick. so just dont gothere if you are not familier with the lay of the land.. blabla...Mike

Lots of useful information. Now I want to go back out and fly it again. Sectionals in the ppt might have been useful.

Lots of useful information. Some maps in the ppt might have been a bit more helpful. Fortunately I had my iPad sectionals. Even better my neighbor helped hold the iPad through the presentation, and found lots of the landmarks for me. (Now I know who to invite for my next bay tour.)

If registration is full up on the FAA site...are we not able to attend?

Hmmm this is really confusing. I called West Valley Flying Club, and they said they just provide the space and have no access to the list of attendee's... I just assumed that if I signed up through this meetup, that whomever created this event would handle adding everyone that RSVP'd to the list. But now I'm not so sure.. Are we on the list or not?

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
