Welcome to our first annual SeaPlane* fly-in to Lake Merritt! If your seaplane is in the shop, feel free to Chair Fly-In to the Lake Chalet, on Lake Merritt in Oakland. It is a fantastic venue, beautiful views, and a good patio for actual interaction.
Meet on the patio/dock (go through the restaurant - the staff can help) to the bar in the back. I'll have my Mach Buffet hat and/or shirt on.
Each year, we do a rainy season "fly-in" to a bay area restaurant, allowing members to drive in when the weather is too variable to reliably plan a fly-in. Traditionally, this was Sky Kitchen, but we've outgrown that venue and it isn't conducive to good socializing.
We'll meet at the Lake Chalet at 4pm, the heart of Happy Hour. They have cheap (but delicious) food and cheap drinks! (See Happy Hour menu here: http://www.thelakecha...)
I'll be there from at least 4-6pm. People who wish to treat this as a predinner nosh and stay for dinner are welcome. Check with the restaurant re: reservations. They have great meals! Their full site: http://www.thelakecha...
This should be an excellent opportunity for many people to come, meet other members, non-pilots and pilots to get to know each other, enjoy an evening, have a drink or two, and not violate FAA regs! (Please, drive responsibly. There is a BART station nearby).
If anyone plans to fly in to OAK, you can shuttle to Bart to the restaurant. If you let me know and the timing is right, I can give you a ride.
*I honestly have no idea if Seaplanes are legal on Lake Merritt. Anyone know, just out of curiousity?
I highly recommend getting one to any pilot! Ian and I got ours at Jack Brown's in Florida and it was the best flying I've ever ever ever experienced!!!
Oh, would I love to go to this. In 1971 I lived in the Lake Merritt Hotel and would rent paddle boats on the lake in the evening. It's just too long a communte from Connecticut .
Re: seaplane rating. I got mine at Twitchell's in Maine. They actually rent C172's on floats. I get recurrent training every July, then rent a floatplane for a week in August and splash & go all over Maine.
There is no "maybe" - only "yes" and "no". Depending on where I am Saturday, Oakland might be a 2-hour drive away so we shall see if I make it or not. Hopefully so!
Kimberly, I know! I was so annoyed (as were many other organizers) when they took away maybe! But, trust me, as a group for pilots, a 'yes' always means 'maybe'. So, just rsvp yes if you plan on making it and if you don't, I understand.
I am looking forward to meeting everyone! This will be my first fly in, but I'll be driving.:)
Sorry I missed everyone too, I was about two hours away and my boyfriend didn't want to make the drive, plus I felt a bit awkward coming alone. Then again, he's not a pilot. Looking forward to meeting you all at a fly-in soon.
Highly doubt it, but you can get your seaplane rating in Sausalito. http://www.seaplane.com/
