Burning Man 2013

  • Aug 25, 2013 · 12:00 PM

I just wanted to put this up so people can start thinking about it. It is a relatively easy flight from the bay area but a brutal drive. The organization is just outstanding. The volunteers go out of their way to create an airport from nothing in the middle of a desert. the experience of landing on a desert playa is unique, challenging and fun all at the same time. It was the most fun I had in a long time.

Buying a ticket tomorrow. Will be volunteering in the Galley. This is my first burn. Any suggestions for a new guy?

So, I'm buying a ticket next week and I am stoked! This will be my fourth burn. I am volunteering and camping with the BRC Airport group. My oldest brother recently passed away of cancer and aviation was his line of work for some time when he was young. I was inspired to check out this group and learn more about aviation, burners who fly and honestly, to do something different at the burn. I still don't have a way to get to the playa but I'm sure I'll figure it out (coming from San Francisco). Woo! Going to be a wild ride!

I hope to see you there Mara. Activity on the BM aviators list as definitely picked up. I still haven't been able to review it all. I know they are asking for contributions for the galley, which is a huge benefit for us. I have no ticket and no plans as of yet, but i will be contributing in hopes of things coming together before the event.

We are going, but trying to secure a plane to take. If anyone is aware of one, will you let me know?

I've taken my RV-9 out 5 years now (and met Jae there last year). Yes, plan on spending the better part of a day cleaning the airplane, if you choose to land...more if you fly a lot while you are there. But if you like art, big parties, extreme airports, and/or general mayhem it's worth it.

Paul, great to hear from you again. Paul was doing his duty as a great GA ambassador by offering rides throughout the week. I generally see the people at BM to be great potential new pilots for GA. Hopefully, i can do the same this time!

Wouldn't miss it for the world. Unless someone can get my bike there, my pax seat is full, sorry...

No, it is not sand. It is a very fine dust. Mostly you dont want to injest too much into your air intake and clogging your air filter. Probably only an issue if you were to do dozens of touch and goes, which nobody will ever do. I ended up taping up gaps with blue painters tape while the plane was parked to minimize dust in the plane. Check out the burning man aviators mailing list with lots more info. https://lists.burningman.com/mailman/options/aviators-list

When you guys say white stuff, how bad is it exactly? Just a bunch of sand blowing around? What are the dangers to the plane?? I would be interested in flying if its not going to screw up the birdie. Can you guys with experience help me understand this?

Awesome! I might be in Nevada, California or Thailand in August but would like to join in if a seat is available.

I have done this for a number of years. I nice flight that week is to go to Mindin for Breakfast then fly over to burning man, make an approach, see the event down low circling the man and then head back to the bay. If you don't want the white stuff on and in your plane, this is a thrill. Check out the notams and keep your head on a swivel.

We plan to camp at the airport. Ian did last year. The only issue is our plane will likely be sold by this time so we will be looking for an extra two seats. Keep us in mind.

I looked into this and I was excited about it. My issue is that I am not really wanting all the white dust/powder driven into all the nooks and crannies of the Piper Dakota I share with two other owners, and I am sure they would agree. I would love to find someone who doesn't have this issue to share a ride with....

I flew into BRC (in a 172) this year for the first time and it was an awesome experience. The views are fantastic and the airport volunteers are great. I was able to fly in this year because I only went for the weekend and could get away with just my backpacking gear. If you plan to spend the whole week and you don't have a camp buddy that can take your camping gear in his/her car, it would take careful weight and balance planning. Also, be sure to read all the fly-in information on the BM airport page, as (albeit temporary) it's a real airport and they do have rules, regulations, and special instructions. See you on the playa!

After seeing Ian's pics of flying some Burning Man attendees this year, I can't wait! Jae -- I will hitch a ride if you let me (fully dressed though).
