For people who enjoy nature hikes please arrive at least 10 minutes early. For those of you who don't hike, join us for the Pre-Holiday T2G Picnic Party!! Hike start time: Arrive by 10:00 a.m. to hike with us until about 11:30 a.m. It is a medium hike with gradual climb that will be about 3 miles round trip. Pre-Holiday T2G Picnic Party Setup at 11:45 a.m. to be enjoyed through about 2:30 p.m. or as late as good conversation and camaraderie continue! Short Tour Presentation at 1:30 p.m. - People may be interested in meeting with a docent for a short presentation about the sustainable /green aspects of the Audubon Center buildings and the nature center in general. We can try some fresh organic produce and other yummy things together in an Al Fresco setting. It would be wonderful if folks could bring note cards identifying the ingredients of their creations, particularly in light of there being a mixture of vegans, vegetarians, omnivores, and folks with various allergies in our group! It will be a picnic/potluck, so please read the choices below and select from one of the categories. If it looks like there will be some categories overlooked, I will get back to those of you who have given your "Yes" RSVP and suggest you consider bringing something else. * Lettuce / vegetable/pickled vegetable salads * Bean (e.g. garbanzo, black bean, pinto, kidney, etc.), rice, or other grain (e.g. quinoa, couscous, barley) salads * Fruit salads & Fresh slices of fruit * Light finger sandwiches * Pasta with bean and vegetable salads * Fresh Bakery Bread *Homemade Baked Goods *Crackers, Hummus, Baba Ghanouj (or other dips/spreads), Raw Vegetables * Trail Mix: Nuts, raisins, figs, apricots, dates, etc *Chips/Salsa * Beverages - Hansen's sodas, Sparkling Cider, Iced Teas, Water, etc If I'm overlooking a category, remind me! Bring your stainless steel bottles or glasses and aim to keep plastic wraps & bags to a minimum. This is your chance to try out those eco bags/totes you've been collecting. If possible, also bring your own washable and reusable, plate, cup, utensils, napkin, etc. to minimize waste; ABSOLUTELY NO GARBAGE should be left anywhere at Debs Park or at the Audubon Center EXCEPT in proper receptacles our group MUST demonstrate good environmental stewardship of the park! It will be our responsibility to dispose of all the garbage and recyclables within the bins located in the courtyard area. If you have a socialized doggie or doggies, please consider bringing him/her or them along, too! Also, please wear hiking boots or tennis shoes with good treads on them for gripping the ground. Bring a hat or visor in case of a sunny day, and dont forget some SPF 30 for your skin, especially if you have a fair-complexion. I will send out a probable weather forecast a few days prior to the event on November 19th! If there is rain in the forecast, the event will be canceled. Dont forget a camera if youre inspired to capture photos of the hills, trees, birds, or other wildlife; remember that well be in a bird sanctuary of sorts! Transition To Green isn't liable for you in the city park - Debs Park area, which includes the hiking trails. You are going at your own risk. Transportation and Directions: Please mapquest or google the location, and if you own a bike and dont live too far away (or if youre ambitious and do live far away!), please consider riding your bike there are places available to lock your bike to. The other environmentally-friendly option besides arranging carpools or biking is to take the Metro Gold Line stop at the old Southwest Museum station it is only about a 10 minute walk from the entrance of Debs Park. Also, note that the stop is on the other side of the 110 freeway from the park. Please inquire for more information if any confusion exists! Parking: On the street and around the Audubon Center will be crowded, which is another reason why youre encouraged to travel in an ecologically-friendly manner! Any questions or concerns, dont hesitate to contact me directly at [masked] Best, Terry
