Scavenger Hunt in European Art and On-Demand Tour!!!

Brooklyn Museum (map)

Selected By: Shelley

Many of you have asked for a more social/interactive meetup, so we are experimenting with a new idea! The meetup will begin with us randomly creating scavenger hunt teams to explore the European collection in the Beaux Arts Court.  The first team to correctly find all the works on the list will get to select a painting from the list and Rich Aste, our European Curator, will talk to the group about it on demand!

Come find your painting!

More about the European collection:

Although the collection of European paintings has often been presented in a chronological arrangement by school or style, this installation exploits the architecture of the soaring Beaux-Arts Court by devoting each wall to an exploration of the meaningful connections that the works display when arranged according to theme. The section called “Painting Land and Sea” surveys the formal methods that painters have used to render their physical surroundings across the centuries. “Art and Devotion” considers the ways in which the artists of the early Renaissance expressed the central tenets of the Catholic faith. “Russian Modern/Русский Модерн” explores the impact and influence of Russian and former Soviet artists on modern European painting. Finally, “Tracing the Figure” charts the enduring artistic interest in the human figure, from portraits that place an individual in a clearly defined place and time to timeless abstractions of the human form.

Kudos to Shelley and Brooke for a fun and challenging scavenger hunt! Even though my team came in second, I feel like I won anyway. The curator you invited was really informative so everyone won with this wonderful format. The experience was very informative, educational, social and competitive too... Grrrrreat!!

The scavenger hunt was a fun, innovative idea. Wish there was more time to socialize post-event, but understand constrained by First Sat events. Really enjoyed curator presentations - I'd sign up for these if more were given at the museum. Learning the historical context, artist's personal history & acquisition/ownership of piece and restoration add So much to appreciation of the art. Look forward to next time. Glad I joined.
