Meet at 9:45am to chat, pee in the Porta-Potties, and load your backpacks, etc. We start hiking at 10:00am. If you're the kind of person who is always late or lost, then pretend the hike starts earlier so you're punctual. If you arrive after 10:00am then you can try to catch us by climbing up the Red Dot trail/Mt Tammany Trail.
When you're driving on I-80W, once you start seeing signs for the Delaware Water Gap tolls get into the right lane and look for the sign for "Dunnfield Creek Natural Area." Don't miss the turn into the lots or you'll have to pay a toll into PA just to make a U-turn and come back to NJ for the hike.
Park in either of the lots and then walk to the area with the picnic tables with the SPECIFIC sticker-covered "Mt Tammany Trail" sign shown in the pic below. There is more than one "Mt Tammany Trail" sign ... so I include this pic so you get the right meeting spot. :)
This hike is Strenuous on the 1.5 mile climb up (very steep and rocky) and Moderate (inclined and rocky) on the other trail down. We will take breaks and pause at the overlooks for photos and snacks. This hike is only about 4 miles, but the steepness and loose rocks are the challenge. Hike includes some scenic overlooks and a creek with small waterfalls. Bring drinks, food, sunscreen, and insect repellent. I expect the hike to take between 3 and 4 hrs depending on the group. Bring sturdy shoes; this is no trail for flip flops, Chuck Taylors, sandals, etc. See pic below for idea of how rocky the trail can be:
If the weather for that day looks "iffy" then check this page before you leave to be sure I haven't cancelled the event.
