Learn to Scuba Dive!

Have you ever wanted the freedom to explore what lies beneath the world’s oceans? It is a completely different and awe inspiring realm under the world’s water sources. Beautiful coral reefs, amazing sea creatures and awe inspiring landscapes. For some the draw is simply to enjoy a world so different from what we experience in our day to day lives. For others, SCUBA provides a chance to explore caves and mysterious ship wrecks and learn about under water habitats. Imagine having the skills to safely travel the world’s most amazing underwater environments both abroad and right here in the Pacific NW!

Recreational diving is quickly becoming more and more popular. Interested in becoming a part of this exciting activity in a safe and easy way? Well then take a NAUI certification divers course through UnderH2O. This course is conveniently located at PSU. All underwater skills are taught in the safety of the university Portland Stott Center pool. The certification dive is done at Mike’s Beach Resort at Hood Canal about two and a half hours away.
I was recently certified and am looking for some more SCUBA buddies. I would not recommend this class if I didn’t think it was an EXCELLENT course. So if you’re interested, sign up! Classes start Monday April 1st! You may sign up with the course instructor or through PSU and must show up to class in order to be part of the certification. Just signing up here is not enough to register you for the class!

Cost: non PSU credit $150

If you want to know my personal experience with the certification you are welcome to contact me.

For more questions about the certification please contact Matt Graves at [masked]

Already a diver? I will be scheduling dive events as well!

Well the one tine I tried diving in my dry suit. I ended up with a gallon of water in my suit. I didn't know I was wet until I tried to get back into the boat and the water went to my boots.

Cert dive is $280 and includes lodging at hood canal 2/3 nights, your air and the stuff you use in class.

I am also an experienced diver but have never tried it around Portland. Will be watching for info about the refresher course and future dive outings!

I'm glad there are a good number of divers responding here and I look forward to meeting you! Should have something about the refresher up soon.

And the pacific NW is super cool! I played football with a sea cucumber and watched a sun star slowly crawl over a dead octopus and eat it! Was so crazy!

Are there actual open diving classes?

I am curious where can you dive around Portland. Also what is the approx initial gear expenditure

Hood canal and the coast. Hood Canal is where you do your cert dive and its beautiful. You won't be buying gear...you want to rent for your cert dive. I believe it was $8 a day for gloves, hood, boots and wet suit. Matt provides your BC, weight belt, fins, tanks andmask. After that renting all your gear is about $60 for a weekend. Eventually you would want your own mask and snorkel, boots, fins, gloves. I'm not sure about the cost of those items since I have only purchased my mask. I tend to buy the nice stuff so mine was $60 but they can be as low as $35?

what if you have been certified but haven't been diving for awhile. Is there a refresher course?

    1 · March 27, 2013

    • Payal

What's awhile? Have you done your advanced certification? I think there seems to be a lot of people who were certified but haven't done their advanced. I'm going to put a meetup for that so that might be a good option. You can always retake the class but not do the open water cert dive as well. Let me get back to you. If there's enough interest maybe we can give a group a quickie!

Kirsten Matt is putting a refresher course together. As soon as something is in place I will give you a heads up.
