Here's another great wine trail for those who can't get enough of the Maryland wine scene. We will be traveling to three different wineries up north.
First on the list will be Red Heifer Winery (24606 Raven Rock Road Smithsburg, MD 21783) (so-called since when the owners bought the land from the previous tenant he insisted they keep his red heifer at the farm, or so I heard it). This winery is a traditional winery with a number of good wines.
Next on the trip we will veer away from traditional wines and go the way of the Vikings. Orchid Cellars (8546 Pete Wiles Rd. Middletown, MD 21769) is a meadery south of Red Heifer with a recently opened tasting room. While they have only recently introduced a traditional merlot to their full tasting line-up, they showcase meads from the fruity-sweet variety to the traditional to the spicy (3 jalapenos) mead.
And last, but not least, is the Distillery Lane Ciderworks (5533 Gapland Road Jefferson, MD 21755). From their website: "The first licensed cidery in Maryland, Distillery Lane Ciderworks offers European-style hard ciders from the juice produced on its 3000-tree specialty orchard. (...) DLC offers a dry still cider, a dry sparkling cider, a semi-sweet cider, and limited runs of premium ciders—such as Kingston Black—and specialty ciders—such as ice cider. All ciders are estate grown, produced, and bottled. In addition to hard cider, DLC also offers fresh cider, cider-making classes, apple picking, cider tastings in the tasting room on the farm, and tours of the orchard."
Metro Option/Carpooling is available, please post if you need a ride from the DC area, and please if you have room in a car, offer a spot up to someone that needs it!
