Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Goodreads description:

Marriage can be a real killer.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

Here's a take on "Gone Girl" I found pretty interesting.

I suppose I mean 'interesting' because she seems to have missed some points of the book and seems to think Flynn agrees with Amy's world view, and I'm not sure I feel the same way.

Wow, I feel like she read an entirely different book than I did. What a pessimistic take on the author's intent!

Lots of excellent discussion and some great ideas brought up by participants. I felt like everyone got a chance to weigh in, too.

This may be the hardest (insert your favorite expletive) book I've ever read...

Oh, don't get me wrong, this is not a book that it's possible to give up on, either. And the narrators are the best in the business, far as I'm concerned. It's just tough for me, esp. Lately. Not the kind of book I can listen to AND do something else, aside from driving/working out/giving blood.

I'm the minority; I did walk away from it the first time. I'm not big on suspense though.

If the RSVPs are still over 15 people a couple of days before, maybe we need to "reserve" a room at Panera? They stopped allowing the "reservations" for a while, but I think they started up again.

In my experience only 1/2 of those that rSVP actually show up, I'm sure we'll be fine :-)

My mommy group attempted to have a book club meeting about this book. The mommy group has a RSVP last minute change rate of maybe 75%. So I was the only person who showed up for the first 45 minutes. :-p

I made a prop for book club... But what's inside? You'll have to come on Sunday to find out! http://goo.gl/ut2CNH

Unfortunately, after getting the book and reading it, I realized that I have a family camping trip that overlaps the meetup. :( I was looking forward to meeting y'all and discussing this fantastic book! Maybe next time.

I have not yet. There is only one copy not yet taken form my local library, but I seem to have a history of not finding what I need there. I am going to head there as soon as I can.

If you're in the Upper Hudson Library system, you can make the request online and a librarian will go pull it from the shelves and hold it for you. Or you could call them up and ask them to hold it for you too. Hope you get your copy!

I'm trying to get my hands on a copy of the book before this so I can read it. If I can, I'm in!

    August 1, 2013

    • Sarah

Hi Sarah! (Great name, BTW) I hope you can get a copy because this one will be tough to follow for people who haven't read the book. Usually, we're pretty open to drop-ins as long as you're willing to listen and share, though!

      August 2, 2013

    • Sarah L.

Why thank you. My library did get it in for me, so once I get it I'll start reading!
