The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that will be in movie theaters on November 15, 2013, Markus Zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

I love how this book does a great job of transitioning between time periods and the author's description of how souls are taken to heaven; great recommendation Sarah :)

Still haven't gotten my hands on the book, and I'm trying to avoid buying more because we've run out of bookshelf space.

Hi! I'm interested in attending for the first time. How does this work? Do we read the book and then discuss it at the meeting? And does anyone know if this one is available at a library so I do not have to purchase it? Thank you!

I am anti ereader. Family has offered to gift me one, my response is always, "donate the cash. To an animal shelter instead"!

This is also my first meetup with the group and I'm looking forward to it as well! Just got the book today from the library.

This is most definitely a great book! We'll see what the group interest in it is... we did read it as a group in 2010, but I think it's been so long the group has completely turned over since then.
