*** It's a great day to kick some a$$! See you there! ***
UPDATE #5: I will meet everyone at the top of the stairs of the Smithsonian Metro stop MALLSIDE exit. Look for the red balloon! In the event of rain, I will direct you to a covered area (a block away) the instructor has informed me we can utilize.
UPDATE #4: I mention this in the event posting, but just a reminder to sign and bring with you the liability waiver here... http://files.meetup.com/214400/self_defense_waiver.pdf. Also, don't forget to wear comfortable clothes, long pants, and athletic shoes. No shorts please.
UPDATE #3: If you were unable to secure a spot for this event online, you have the option of "flying standby." There are usually 4 no-shows for this event, so you just might be able to get on board. Make sure to come early with exact cash.
UPDATE #2: The early-bird price has now ended and the ticket price is now $20. Looking forward to seeing you there!
UPDATE #1: There are 10 early bird spots left and the price will increase from $15 to $20 when the early bird spots are gone or before Sunday, April 22nd (whichever comes first). To be fair to those who want to join in and are ready to make payment, I'll be removing those that haven't paid by Wednesday, March 28th. So make payment to *truly* lock in your spot.

Violent crime in DC is 3 times the national average.

Let's learn how to realistically defend ourselves on the street using effective, practical techniques.
I have recruited Joe Chandler, Chan Tao Founder and P.R.I.D.E Authentic Self Defense Developer with 30 years martial arts experience, as our instructor. Join us for this informative, interactive, and fun 2 - 3 hour introductory session and hands on (yes, HANDS ON!) workshop as we achieve realistic training that has application on the street.
We'll train using situations, scenarios, environments, and locations that apply to our needs and lifestyle! Our concerns, experiences, insecurities, and fears will be addressed to help educate us on trends, threats, and to develop instinctive abilities that will open our eyes and lead us to empowerment and feeling more confident. The approach will be tailored for our situation, location, and demographic. We'll learn what we need to know, discuss what we want to know, and shown how to explore and use our natural instincts to develop and apply effective, deterrents, techniques and processes in real life situations.
We'll get real "down and dirty!" No uniforms, no bowing, no hard to understand traditional words you cannot spell. Though the intensity gets high and the task and focus at hand is very serious, we'll get to enjoy ourselves and yes, laugh out loud due to the entertainment value of our subject matter and the creative interactive experience.
We are priveledged to have Coach / Master Joe Chandler as our instructor. As a certified 5th degree black belt in multiple disciplines (Chun Kuk Do, Tang Soo Do, and Chun Kuk Moo Sul), a 2nd degree black belt in Shotokan, a blue belt in Machado Jiu-Jitsu, and a former full contact fighter, he is an established and recognized instructor, competitor, coach, champion, and innovator for over 30 years, and has taught reality street self defense seminars for over 20 years. He has worked with federal and local law enforcement. He has also taught and trained military, homeland security, bouncers, event staff, and government personnel.
Our class consists of lecture and lessons, followed by hands-on training where we'll practice techniques that have real life application on the street!
The normal charge for this event is $30 elsewhere. We've got an early bird special for this event of $15 (the price of an entree at many restaurants)! The first 20 paid sign-ups, or those who pay before Sunday, April 22nd get the early bird price! After that, the ticket price will go to $20. We have a LIMITED number of spots so make sure to RSVP early and make payment to get the early bird price!
Also please know that your RSVP is not guaranteed unless we receive payment. When you pay, your online receipt is confirmation that we have received your payment.
Come join us, tell a friend, and let's get together to learn realistic street self defense techniques! Hope to see you there for this practical, informative, interactive, and fun workshop!
- J.T.
P.S. Wear comfortable clothes, long pants, and athletic shoes. No shorts please. Also, please note we will all need to sign the liability waiver found here... http://files.meetup.com/214400/self_defense_waiver.pdf. Please print, fill out, and bring with you.

I had a lot of fun and the participants were all great, but the instructor seemed a little bit scattered in his presentation.
April 30, 2012
It was a good workout and a good introduction to the self-defense techniques. The class seemed a little disorganized though.
