The world of the media is changing as fast as everything else. A politician makes a speech ignored by the conventional media and it gets 1 million hits on utube. The world of Blogs forces a resignation of a chief government adviser before the daily newspapers know what is going on! The new social media is challenging the conventional news elites as never before. Politicians and their established lobbies are running scared. The new social media has blown a hole through the existing elites. What does this mean for the future? Speakers include,

Daniel Hannan is an MEP and became famous overnight. As he says – “The internet has changed politics - changed it utterly and forever ……I made a three-minute speech in the European Parliament, aimed at Gordon Brown. I tipped off the BBC and some of the newspaper correspondents but, unsurprisingly, they ignored me: I am, after all, simply a backbench MEP. When I woke up (the following) morning, my phone was clogged with texts, my email inbox with messages. Overnight, the YouTube clip of my remarks had attracted over 36,000 hits. By today, it was the most watched video in Britain.” Currently it has over 2.2 million hits. Is this the shape of politics and the media in this century?

Carol Haslam has had a long history in broadcasting. Joining the BBC Open University in the early 1970’s she went on to be the first Commissioning Editor for Education in Channel 4 and then to become the Director of Programmes for Superchannel. She later became a freelance producer and was also Executive Producer of the popular BBC programme Ground Force. She is a Trustee of both the Wildscreen Festival and the One World Broadcasting Trust.

Professor Barrie Axford is the author of the book “New Media and Politics” which makes a successful attempt to map the potentially transformative effects of new media on various aspects of political institutions and culture, both at a theoretical and empirical level. He is Professor of Politics and Head of the Department of International Relations Politics and Sociology at Oxford Brookes University. He is interested in the extent to which commercial populism now dominates electoral and other political discourses; the ways in which the functions of leadership, government and political parties are modified by different forms of both old and new media and the democratic or undemocratic import of such changes.

Sunny Hundal is editor of Liberal Conspiracy an influential and growing Blog. He is also involved with Pickled politics - a current affairs magazine / group blog with the primary focus on British politics, current affairs, media and society. He is also editor of the online magazine Asians in Media and founder of the thinktank New Generation Network. He has a degree in Economics from Brunel University and has written articles for leading British newspapers including The Financial Times and The Independent.

This meetup is being held in conjunction with the London Bridge Festival.

    •  It was refreshing and exciting, it took a while to warm up but it soon found its feet, with great audiance participation. This kind of meeting has a real sense of hope and positivity for a better future.
    •  until equitable status exists for all those who use new technology - including non-consensually applied 'research' medical device users - it begs the question 'who's new media world?' and indeed a public interest response before we commit to a landscape which denies our intellectual property/performance rights etc. at a time of recession...xf. help the world to feed itself.

The topic and speakers were very interesting. It was great that they had slightly different views on the subject. One suggestion would be to elevate the speakers so that the people at the back could see them when they were talking and make sure they speak into a microphone as it was quite hard to hear the third speaker. I did not even catch his name.
    •  Very good debate, brilliant speakers.
    • Mona Walsh (+1 guest)
great set up and speakers. Really interesting, passionate and thought provoking debate -

Very inspiring and gave me a lot of great ideas.
    •  I enjoyed the meeting, but found it difficult to hear I ask that the speakers stand I can only comment on what Daniel was saying as his voice was projected correctly I of course I could see him I found his content very exciting and refreshing His point that the New Media gives back to everyone the POWER of speech and would perhaps devolve the power position from the hierarchical king pin down to a broader based position, sound good to me. Thus giving the autonomy to those involved in specific issues I think that we who are not directly involved in the political class have for too long felt powerless to make an impact with important issues concerning our daily lives New media give us this opportunity I believe that the nuts and bolts of how to organize these opportunities will evolve naturally and let us be positive With the young generation so good at New Media there is bound to be some very innovative ways going forward in how to run our societies
    •  Just to thank all those who turned up for a very interesting meeting despite the heavy rains and the floods on the underground. I know quite a few people were unable to come because of the atrocious conditions but 70 people did brave it and I hope it was well worth it. Even Daniel Hannan got caught up because of the floods but he did arrive and together with the other speakers and good questions and comments from the floor an intriguing debate ensued. It raised many questions about how the new media is changing politics and society and I hope we follow this through with further meetings.
    •  Very interesting talks and discussions
    •  Very good range of speakers who provided different & complementary insights/perspectives. I also thought the questions & comments were well handled so a good range of different opinions & ideas were heard & that the members of the panel dealt with questions & comments very well. Of course I was pleased to be able to ask my question! Thanks.
