Fair Trade Action (Mini Meetup)

This location is shown only to members

Shared Interest is a co-operative lending society that aims to reduce poverty in the world by providing fair and just financial services. They work with fair trade businesses all over the world, both producers and buyers, providing credit to help them trade and develop.

21st Century Network together with the Fair Trade Social Action Group have organised a mini-meetup with Sally Reith from Shared Interest on 15th June to run a talk and workshop evening on the work of Shared Interest and how to get involved in the fantastic work they do.

This meetup will look at the work Shared Interest is involved in as they work extensively with community-based business in Africa and other continents to help them make the most of fair trade.

There will also be information about becoming a Shared Interest Ambassador to help to promote and become part of the work of Shared Interest by taking part in a wide range of activities.

This mini meetup will give us an opportunity to look more closely at how Fair Trade works in practice and provide us with information on how we can get involved and what help we can offer ourselves.

Ann-Marie Morgan will chair this meetup and you can get in touch with her and the Fair Trade Social action Group at ][masked]

This meeting is being hosted by MWB Business Exchange who have offered their meeting room in Mayfair for some of our meetings.

I am the chair of NDOPCRAFT a fair trade organisation based in Cameroon. The main objective of NDOPCRAFT is to improve the wellbeing and safeguard the livelihood of marginalised artisans and farmers in rural communities in Cameroon.

By providing professional and non-exploitative marketing opportunities based on the WFTO CODE OF PRACTICE.

Whereby producers within the informal sector receive just rewards for their efforts and products.

We are seeking fair trade buyers around.make trade fair

Not quite what I had expected.

This is one of the more interesting groups that allows attendees to listen and participate in debates on issues facing real people. In my view the most important reality of this group is the people who attend really care and more importantly we can really make a collective difference. In this episode Sally Reith from Shared Interest a UK based operation with regional offices in Costa Rica and Nairobi delivered a very impressive presentation about the work of her organization. In short ‘Shared Interest’ lend money to Fair Trade certified producers and purchasers at rates that are much lower than commercial lenders. It is true that Shared Interest is the “best kept secret” of the fair Trade movement and I personally believe their business model is a great alternative to ‘just giving’.

I think that it was made of a very good group of people and the discussion was quite interesting.

It was a good opportunity to learn about Shared Interest and its partnership with Fair Trade. It gave us insights on things that can be done to help the FT movement other than just buying FT products.
