Guantánamo Documentary followed by discussion with Directors

We are holding a screening of the documentary film - 'Outside The Law: Stories From Guantánamo', followed by a discussion with one of the British returnees and the directors of the film.
This is being organised through Barbara Zollner from Birkbeck College. The building is opposite Birkbeck’s main entrance
"Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo" is a new documentary film telling the story of Guantánamo (and including sections on extraordinary rendition and secret prisons). The film brings forward that the Bush administration turned its back on domestic and international laws and focuses on how prisoners were rounded up in Afghanistan and Pakistan without adequate screening (and often for bounty payments). It asks questions about why some of these men may have been in Afghanistan or Pakistan for reasons unconnected with militancy or terrorism (as missionaries or humanitarian aid workers, for example).
The film is based around interviews with former prisoners (Moazzam Begg and, in his first major interview, Omar Deghayes, who was released in December 2007), lawyers for the prisoners (Clive Stafford Smith in the UK and Tom Wilner in the US), and journalist and author Andy Worthington, and also includes appearances from Guantánamo's former Muslim chaplain James Yee, a London-based imam, and the British human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce.

costanzaThe documentary was good but during the discussion there was not enough emphasis on what actions can be taken to speed up the closure of the prison. I think most people who attend these events already have a fairly good idea of the issues involved, what they want is to find out more about how they can get involved. We were given two letters to send to to William Hague and to our local MP's but it would have been useful to get some instructions on how to find out the names and the addresses of our MP's. A leaflet with relevant websites would also have been helpful for people who wanted to find out more and/or get involved. -

vincent heilbronPity was that Omar couldn't make it, actually meeting one of the people who has been in Guantanamo was for me the main reason for coming out.

Hi there, even if one or two might have been to afganistan or pakistan to fight for the taliban or against the occupation, it does not justify the inhuman torture they endured in gitmo. All prisoners, whatever they are arrsted for, should have the right to a fair trial, treated humanely whilst in captivity, and should not be tortured.
