GlobalNet21 is co-operating with the Global Summit in developing webinars and running workshops around the theme of the legacy of the Olympics and whether the spirit generated can be focused on developing a more sustainable world. THE GLOBAL SUMMIT is a social, economic and environmental forum discussing solutions that could benefit the greatest number of beings and bringing them into contact with those who have the power to help bring them into being.
During the Summit we will have helped develop four webinars and two workshops - one on PhotoJournalism and how that can capture the spirit of the Olympics and one on CitizenVideo and how that medium can be used to engage and inform people so they have a voice on the public square.
This will culminate in a meeting and dialogue on August 16th where we will discuss whether the spirit of the Olympics can be focused on creating the energy for a sustainable future. Can there be a regenerative legacy for the Olympics in the East End but also globally because of the opportunity that the Olympics has given to bring people together on a global scale.
To help us develop this discussion around creating a lasting legacy will be two organisations that we are working with and who are running workshops at the event. They will present some of the material produced in their workshops as a focus for a discussion on the spirit of legacy. They are,
PhotoVoice who is the world leader in the field of participatory photography. PhotoVoice delivers projects in the UK and internationally that help to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and, bridge divides in society. They will look at qualities and values’ of the Olympics, and the potential benefits they could bring to UK society if sustained.
VisionOntv is an organisation that aims for the widest possible distribution of video for social change. It enables you to create and collate video: they create shows to put news in context, and collate the best social change video from around the world. They also curate it so that it can be found and enjoyed easily by anyone who wants to. They will involve people in developing video vignettes in their workshop and community dialogue and will use this in this evening meeting to look at how the new media can be used to sustain the spirit of the Olympics.
Peter Thomond who is Director of Innovation and Strategy at SportInspired. SportI nspired’s Community Games unleash the potential of communities and awaken aspirations to inspire happier, healthier lives. They are an innovative and exciting approach to serving the objectives of community development and increasing youth and adult participation in sport. They use sport as a vehicle to unleash the potential of communities and awaken aspirations of young people to enrich lives. They have strong views about the legacy of the Olympics for young people and what needs to be done to ensure that legacy

Mr.Sumairia,
Your response highlighted much that is wholly disingenuous about England; Dow Chemical were responsible not only for the MASS murder in Bhopal but also for 'Agent Orange' in Vietnam (remember?).
We can ALL pontificate in the relative 'comfort' of our armchairs; in the meantime WHITE America and its lackey, WHITE England ,and its lackeys, CONTINUE to be 'The Dragon' that England's very own St. George was supposed to have slayed !
Can You ALL 'smell' the hypocrisy and duplicity ?

Sustainable Olympics? Not so sure about that. In the pursuit to enjoy the olympics we all forgot the mirky side of the games; gs4 handling of security; wrap around for stadium built by Dow (Bhopal Disaster) and loss of income for small biz in London (effects which will be known much later). Enjoy the Paralympics and deal with the hangover on 10th September of the economy and not ethical olympics that we all forgot about for 3 months

Sorry can't make it now, something definitely shifted in the collective spirit during the olympics, how can we keep it going and directed to other huge looming challenges? Or do we need to turn social and environmental challenges into spectacular events in themselves in order to bring out the best in us all collectively? Love to know where it gets to and come to any follow ups. Owen

Pamela, the emphasis of the Global Summit is indeed "..on bringing people together on a global scale ...and .. looking at digital tech to enable ongoing collaboration and communication. " ..amongst other things. The focus is very much on looking at nurturing the health of humanity as a whole while honouring what the planet is capable of sustaining. There will be many practically oriented groups with outcomes to walk away with and act on.

Absolutely Ms.McLean; if THIS 'meting' is about the Global collaboration of of people for the the 'betterment' of the race of humanity (and I choose my words carefully), then I applaud IT.
However, I suspect that IT is about 'commercially driven' exploitative simpletons, without a 'conscience', making the 'right noises' in order to secure a 'fast buck' !
Never surrender to 'The Flock' because it is 'easier'. Rather, simply REFUSE to cooperate, a Gandhiesque TRUTH.

I'm intrigued by the many possible interpretations of this title, and wondering how much it will be "my thing".
As I'm attending the Global Summit I'm hoping this does really tie in with that. if the emphasis is on bringing people together on a global scale then I'm very interested, and even more so if we're looking at digital tech to enable ongoing collaboration and communication. Sustainable futures are also my interst. On the other hand if it's mostly about sport or regeneration in the East End I'll have made a mistake in attending.
As for the Olympic Spirit I'm not too sure what that really means. The winning competitors were amazing, and it's great to see so many different countries represented, but the Olympics is about intense competition and I'm interested in collaboration - I wonder what others see as the "Olympic Spirit".

What I am trying to say is that we will need to think outside of the box to further generate the momentum that has been achieved by bringing and hosting the XXX Olympic Games to our shores in London and other parts of the country and we can do this by encouraging a spirit of sports, culture, tourism, trade and a boost to the economy through friendly competition and the participation of all the people who live in Britain; adults, youths and children.

The London 2012 Olympics has already created a wave of enthusiasm across the country and it has done a respectable job to encourage inclusion but more effort is needed to be placed in extending inclusion to minority communities and low income communities many of whom weren't able to directly join in the fun and enthusiasm of getting to see an event at the Olympic Venues. There will need to be a big culture change in creating sports as a unifying bond between the diverse communities within Britain.
For a start I believe that schools may benefit from additional sports leave and out of class sports practice for about 2hrs (worth of 2 GCSE subjects). In doing so, they can choose to excel in a sport of their choice by being given access to a sports ground or sports centre to train at with the support of a sports instructor as part of the school curriculum.

I wanted to come only to say this.
Please get one from the waiting list in my place as i am not well enough to get out of the house.
Sorry about it.

Please look at Olympics in the context of the state of the country and that of the world.
The word ''legacy'' has any meaning?
1. Nationally
I was a supply teacher in the 80s and 90s in about 15 primary schools and 15 secondary schools around the South, Southeast and North London, parts of Kent and Essex adjoining London. I was outraged to find hardly any games except an hour or so of weekly games in the timetable.
Until this situation is reasonably improved, I am NOT happy about Olympics.
2. Internationally against
i. a teeny tiny fraction of people in participation and others watch.
if regional games meet is encouraged, more people can participate
ii.disgusting, frightening and widening gaps in the society all over the world
iii. population/pollution explosion,
iv. depletion of natural resources

The 'Question' is 'open ended' !
Is 'The Spirit' THE legacy?
Or, have the 'flag waving, indoctrinated, feel-good endowed sheep' become OUR new masters ?
That wonderful ancient Greek Olympian 'spirit' died with The Ancient Greeks; what remains NOW is simply the exploitation of those noble principles.
Why do any of us (the real souls) pretend that any 'debate' on any Government controlled 'project' can EVER come to any 'good' ?

Sorry I am now unable to join you, but I would love to hear echoes of the meeting. All the best Margarita

So funny, I almost ended up living at Goodenough College in the 1990's while doing my degree in Physics at the University of London. Instead I ended up at International House on the other side of the square.

Hi there. I am an occupational psychologist and one of my areas of expertise is improving the performance of others. It would be great to talk about how we could keep up this positivity after the Olympics and create a legacy in community sports that promotes the unity we have witnessed over the last few weeks.
