Paradox Trail Trip: Supported 4 day ride from Montrose, CO to Moab (June 2-5)

No location was chosen

This will be an exploratory trip as I've never done the trail and don't know anyone that has. The bus will be departing Denver at noon on June 1st. Plan on riding the 2nd through the 4th, and be back in Denver late on the 5th of June.

NOTE: Departure time change!!!

Due to work conflicts, we'll be leaving late Wednesday/early Thursday instead of during the day. Call me at [masked] if you have any questions or want to discuss problems you might be having getting out of work!

There will be a small fee of $45 to pay for the support driver. Transportation to and from Denver is free if you want. If you will be driving yourself, please contact me so that we can figure out where and when to meet you in Montrose.

The following itinerary is my best guess at this point. Things may change due to suggestions, weather, or me learning more about the trail

Day 1, June 1st:

  • Depart Denver at noon. If you live near downtown or East, meet at my house.
  • Contact me if you live in Lakewood or elsewhere West of town for pick up options.
  • Arrive in Montrose before dark and find camping
  • Eat in Montrose, or at the campsite - individual choice

Day 2, June 2nd:

  • Breakfast in Montrose and shuttle to the pass
  • Ride from Divide Rd. (9800 feet - possible snow!) to Tabeguache Creek
  • 28.6 miles, no lunch support probable

Day 3, June 3rd:

  • Tabeguache Creek to intersection with Highway 141/Dolores River
  • At Highway 141 get in the bus and get shuttled to Bedrock Overlook.
  • OR, ride/push your bike up the hike-a-bike to the top of Bedrock Overlook.
  • No lunch support
  • 31.75 miles if you take the bus to the top

Day 4, June 4th:

  • 28 miles to Kokopelli trail intersection
  • From there, you can take the easy descent down Sand Flats Road and into town or jump on the bus.
  • For stronger riders, you can choose to take the Porcupine Rim Trail to 128 and ride 6 more road miles into town.
  • Camp somewhere on BLM land or at a Sand Creek campsite

Day 5, June 5th:

  • Rest in Moab, ride something in Moab, or depart early.
  • Group will decide.
  • Return to Denver.

This will be a three to four day exploratory trip on the Paradox Trail from Montrose, CO to Moab, UT. It's about 110 miles with great scenery and is mostly jeep roads. I'm still looking into vehicle meet-up points to see if we can do supported lunches and where to camp. There's a good chance we'll have to carry our lunches the first two days.

The bus just has seats, tables, and storage. It is NOT outfitted with a kitchen or any other RV amenities. I will bring a two burner propane stove.

You are responsible for:

  • Bike, tools, pump, spare tubes, water bottles/camelbak.
  • Please check or have checked and fixed:
    • that your brake pads/shoes still have life
    • that your tires still have life
    • play in any bearings
    • any suspension leaks
  • Sunscreen, water, and clothing for sun, rain, or whatever the desert sends us.
  • Food for two breakfasts, three lunches, and two dinners at a minimum. Bring any pots/utensils you might need. I'm only providing the stove.
  • Energy bars/gels or whatever you need for on-trail nutrition
  • Tent, sleeping bag, pad

The bus doesn't have beds, but can be slept in if you want or if the weather gets nasty.

Here's some random info from the internet:

Trail is well marked with signage in many locations. Long, tough climb out of Paradox Valley but the changes in scenery are well worth it! Paradox Valley B&B is a great place to stay and rest up for the big climb into Utah!
Because of its length (110 mile) riders will encounter a variety of riding conditions. Most of the tougher sections will be found east of Buckeye Reservoir as the trail heads for the Uncompahgre Plateau. Lots of hike-a-bike sections and fun, technical rocky sections north and east of Nucla. Great views as you climb onto the Plateau.
Beautiful route across Western Colorado. The portion I rode had zero singletrack but it was still worthwhile, though I wouldn't travel just to ride this section.
