*** It's a great day for a boat ride to see the cherry blossoms! See you there! ***
UPDATE #7: If you were unable to secure a spot for this event online, you have the option of "flying standby." There are usually 10 no-shows for this event, so you just might be able to get on board. Make sure to come early with exact cash.
UPDATE #6: Don't forget, the boarding point is 1/2 block away (you’ll see the waterfront) from the address listed. Just a reminder, look for the red kayak / ACK flag, I'll be on the pier! Please account for Metro, traffic, and parking delays, and please arrive on time! Following the tour, let's adjourn at the Sequoia outdoor bar, right on the dock, for food and drinks, for anyone who wants to hang out after!
UPDATE #5: The forecast for our event currently shows zero percent chance of rain, so the captain has given us the green light to open additional spots. Get them while you can! In the chance the weather turns for the worse by event time, those that signed up in the second block of tickets will not be able to attend and will receive a full refund. See you there!
UPDATE #4: If you are on the "Want a Spot" list, the captain has informed me that we may be able to open up more spots the week of the event should weather forecasts indicate a nice day. We'll then be able to make use of the open deck area. Check back here then!
UPDATE #3: The early-bird price has ended and the ticket price is now $25. Looking forward to seeing you there!
UPDATE #2: There are 9 early bird spots left and the price will increase from $20 to $25 when the early bird spots are gone or before Sun. Apr. 6th (whichever comes first). To be fair to those who want to join in and are ready to make payment, I'll be removing those that haven't paid by Sun. Mar. 16th. So make payment to *truly* lock in your spot. I hope to see you there!
UPDATE #1: Based on member comments re: the peak bloom forecast being later than expected this year (Apr. 8 - 12), I reached out to the boat company to let me know if any spots open up with this in mind. Lo and behold a spot opened up, so we are rescheduling this event to Sun. Apr. 13th, same time, same place. If you are unable to make the new date, please let me know NO LATER THAN end of day Mon. Mar. 10th for a full refund. No refunds will be given after that date. See you there!
Let's check out the cherry blossoms!
I've reserved a 65-foot double decker boat for us, and made special arrangements with a captain and crew to take us down the Potomac for a 90 minute tour that:
• Highlights the panoramic view of the ~4000 cherry blossom trees surrounding the Tidal Basin, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, National Mall, and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial!
• Along the way, we'll get a great view of Washington DC's skyline as we pass by famous landmarks to include Watergate, the Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Memorial
• Sunset is at 7:18pm, so the timing will be perfect for a spectacular view of the flowering trees reflecting off the water. Bring a camera, and make use of your panoramic mode feature!
• Discounted Cherry Blossom cocktail drinks will also be provided for our group!
DC's cherry blossom collection is one of the largest and most historic in the U.S. Given as a gift from Japan in 1912, they symbolize clouds in Japan due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life. We'll get to see the numerous different types of cherry blossom trees, including the famous Yoshinos, as well as the Kwanzan, Weeping Japanese Cherry (or Higan Cherry), Uussuzumi Cherry, Sargent Cherry, and Snow Goose varieties. Peak bloom over the past 9 years has averaged out to Mar. 30th, which coincidentally is the day of our charter. =)
We will check people in at 5:30pm and the boat will leave PROMPTLY at 6pm.
The normal charge for this 90 minute tour is $40. We've got an early bird special for this event of $20! The first 50 paid sign-ups, or those who pay before Sat. Mar. 23rd (whichever comes first) get the early bird price! After that it will go up to $25. Secure your slot by rsvp'ing yes AND making payment!
Also please know that your RSVP is not guaranteed unless we receive payment. When you pay, your online receipt is confirmation that we have received your payment.
So come join us, tell your friends, and let's have a great evening taking in the Washington DC's panoramic skyline featuring the lovely DC cherry blossoms!
Metro and Parking
We will be leaving out of Georgetown Washington Harbor. The boarding point is 1/2 block away (you’ll see waterfront) from the address listed. Look for the red flag! The closest Metro stop is Foggy Bottom (Orange & Blue lines), about a 15 minute walk. We suggest using wmata.com for travel planning. Don't forget to account for Metro, traffic, and parking delays. If you are driving, you will need to find street parking or a garage.
Payment Instructions (Paypal account not required):
Please follow the instructions below for making payment (if payment by smartphone doesn't work, please try your computer). Payment at the door will be permitted only should the event not sell out. Most of our events do sell out, so we recommend you secure your spot online early. If you make payment for less than the current ticketed price displayed without prior correspondence, your RSVP will be removed.
1. Select "Yes" under "Will you attend?"
2. Enter the number of guests coming and click "Finish RSVP"
3. Click "Pay Now" at the top of the event posting near the ticket price per person
4. Verify correct dollar amount for number of people you're paying for, click "Pay Now" button
5. If you don't have a Paypal account, click "Pay with a Debit or Credit Card"
6. If you have a Paypal account, simply log in, and pay as you normally would via Paypal
We will have a master list of all those that have paid. It’s not required, but I recommend printing out your payment confirmation as a backup. When you check-in, your RSVP will be listed under the name of the Paypal or credit card account used to make payment. Typically, this is your LEGAL name as shown on your driver's license. Sometimes, it may be under a company name if you set up your Paypal or credit card account that way. If you are not sure what it is, please take a moment to log into your Paypal account (it will say "Welcome, [your account name]" at the top) or your credit card account to find out. If you are RSVP'd under someone else's payment, please use that name for check-in.
Refund Policy & Ticket Resell
Since we paid in advance for this event, all sales are final unless the event is canceled or rescheduled. Similar to a concert ticket or a football game ticket, you are free to sell your ticket to someone else if you are unable to attend. I suggest posting in the comment box for the event, that you have a ticket for sale. Work out payment between yourselves, and have the seller send the organizer an email through their Meetup profile (do not comment in the comment box of the event posting) letting us know the full name and Meetup profile URL (if a member) of the person taking your spot. Thanks for understanding. =)
If you have any special needs (e.g. wheelchair, etc.), let us know in advance (a week or more before the event) and we will do our best to accommodate. If you let us know the day of the event, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate. Thank you for understanding and we appreciate the courtesy of a heads up!
