We are looking for volunteers to use their muscles to feed the community. We are assisting a small food pantry in the Washington Park Area operated by the Coppin Memorial A.M.E. Church and Coppin Community Center. They have been serving the south side of Chicago for the last 95 years.
The CCC operates a food pantry every Monday night, but they receive their food from a delivery van earlier in the day. We need volunteers to help unload a van of food and bring it into the building for proper storage. The day event is on Monday, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Volunteers will work together and should feel comfortable lifting boxes that are 20 to 40 pounds. We work in teams so you do not have to lift anything heavier than you feel comfortable lifting. A typical food delivery is about 2000 pounds. We will go up and down a short flight of stairs with 6 steps during the unloading. This is your chance to get in on a weight lifting and Step Aerobics workout without having to go to the gym, and feel good about yourself in multiple ways. Please only sign up to help with this event if you are physically comfortable with this weight requirement.
If you RSVP to bring a guest, please be sure you and your guests are fully committed to come and help, otherwise, you will create a shortage of volunteers if you cancel in the last minute or don't bring the volunteers you reserved for guest spots. This will put a burden on the other volunteers and negatively affect the food pantry's operation. If you are not sure about your schedule, you can just wait until the last moment to sign up on Monday before 12:30 pm.
