Kayaking at Elkhorn Slough

I WILL UPDATE THIS INFO AS THE TIME APPROACHES

THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT EXPERIENCE THAT WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN.

April is the time of the year were "puppies" are born and all over the place. Great time to visit and see them in action according to our guide. This time, we will venture the waters on our own and enjoy the place at our own pace and leisure.

I put a limit of 20 people, but if more people want to come, I am pretty sure they will accommodate us.

Elkhorn Slough is one of the last coastland wetlands in California. Located on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, 3.5 miles from Moss Landing, it has been described in the San Francisco Chronicle as the best place for wildlife viewing along the length of California Highway 1.

We will meet at the Kayak Connection at 2370 Highway 1 Moss Landing, CA[masked] for Kayaking at ELKHORN SLOUGH.

Kayak Connection on the Elkhorn Slough offers closed deck kayak rentals to all skill levels. Due to the calm nature of the waters of the Slough no experience is necessary for taking out a kayak to visit the otters and harbor seals.
All prices include a lifejacket-- required for all renters-- paddle and paddling jacket.

PRICE:

Cost: $35 for a  single. $55 for a double.  You must let the instructor know if you are interested in renting a double or single kayak and are looking.

The first thing we will do is sign a liability release and pay for our rentals. We will then watch a short safety video about the area. The staff will then help us get the correct gear and show us how to wear it properly. After a safety and paddle talk by a staff member we will be taken to the dock and helped into our kayaks.

What to Bring/Wear
You will get a lifejacket, paddling jacket, sprayskirt and paddle. Try to avoid wearing jeans or sweats. They suggest dressing in layers of fleece, wool, capilene or synthetic clothing. Weather conditions can change quickly on the water and you are better off with too many layers then being cold!
They recommend that we bring:

• TOWEL... You may get wet :) AND GLOVES, GLOVES, GLOVES!
•A hat and sunglasses, water goggles if you were contact lenses and are concerned of falling into the water... not to worry, we promise to fish you out of it.

•Sunscreen

•Water and a snack (will eat at Phil's later)
•Camera and/or binoculars
•Waterproof shoes, change of shoes for later, etc...

http://kayakconnection.com/

After kayaking we will go to Phil's for lunch in Moss Landing.

    Best. Kayak. Day. Ever.

Absolutely great. Sea otters and seals with their pups. Thanks to everyone for posting photos.

Nothing that dramatic. A guy hit a parked pickup truck and drove away. I got a photo of the driver and car. As I was leaving a note on the pickup truck, the owner of the truck came up and I gave him the info. Hopefully the insurance will follow up.

I have decided NOT to join the carpool, both because I don't know what time I'll need to come back and because I found that going 101 is not that much longer from my house and I HATE 17, so I'll meet y'all down there...can't wait!

Hey fellow Kayakers. I work in Watsonville, about 20 minutes north of the Elk Horn Slough. It was overcast, very cool, and windy all day today, prior to me leaving the office at 4:30 pm. The weather forecast is pretty much the same for tomorrow. Please remember to wear layered clothing tomorrow. And especially, plan to bring a change of dry clothing after the adventure. Even on a warm day, either in a "sit-on-top" or an enclosed kayak, your rear end will get wet, and you'll be more comfortable, either at the lunch or driving home after the adventure, to change your clothes. Have fun!

Kayak Connection did not return my message regarding renting a single kayak. Based on George's comment, I am going to assume they are out of all kayaks and not attempt to go. Sorry to miss it, but fortunately there is an Uvas Canyon Waterfall hike I can do instead which looks like fun. I hope you all have a great time.

Hi William. I was told yesterday around 2:00 p.m that they were out of double kayaks, and that I was able to obtain the last single kayak. I'll bet that if you even showed up tomorrow morning, there will be a few last minute cancellations which will make the kayaks available for rent. Just a thought... Your option of hiking up at the Uvas Canyon sounds cool also. Good luck.

I called this afternoon to get a kayak and they are sold out. I guess I wil have to wait till next time.

George, I left a message at about 5:30 that I wanted a single kayak. but I did not get a call back. The message did not indicate that they were closed. Did they say they were sold out of all kayaks or just doubles? Thanks.

    • George Z.

I wanted a single. He said non left

Weather update. I live in Capitola and working from home today. This morning was cool and foggy. The sun broke through around noon. When making the reservation for the double sit on top kayak a few minutes ago I confirmed that the weather at Moss Landing is the same. Be prepared for fog. I was not told they didn't have anymore double kayaks left so I wonder if they are bringing some down from Santa Cruz?

No, we're not. Since I was the one who asked for a partner, I assumed I was calling. I did so earlier. I need to call them back with a cc number (I was in a public place so I couldn't give it) but they said they were holding one for me.

This is one of my favorite places to Kayak on the Central Coast. Overall, this will be a great and fun experience to be had! Watch out for those sand crabs on the perimeter... Also, at certain times of the year, the infant Otters and especially the baby Seals that like to try to jump across the front of your Kayak to play! This is a really fun experience to have, but not legally allowed for you to get too close to the Otters and baby Seals (though they have no guidelines to follow..., they are just having fun and play where they want to)... Oh, and please use the restroom prior to launching.... Getting stuck in the muck is pretty challenging when you need a "break", and is not much fun to try to relaunch... Have a great time!

Phuong, I sent you email via Meetup yesterday that I would partner with you, but I did not get a reply. If you want to partner, let me know via email and we can exchange cell phone numbers, I do not like to post my number on a public forum. You can email through the Meetup link or directly to [masked].

I just came off the wait list and I'm confused do I need to book my own kayak? Is there someone out there who has booked themselves a double and needs a partner? If not I'll just book myself a single.

    • Lorette

Great, Thanks Kimberly! I'm going to call now and book a double as it sounds like that needs to be done.

    Hello Fellow Kayakers!,
Please, remember to bring GLOVES and layered clothing. It will get cold in the water in the way back as we face the wind. Also, jeans are not suggested They get wet and heavy and takes a long time to dry out. See you all soon! :)

Can we officially declare a carpool meet spot at the Kohls in Campbell (Hamilton exit off 17)? Everyone interested in carpooling meet there at 7:30?
