I WILL UPDATE THIS INFO AS THE TIME APPROACHES
THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT EXPERIENCE THAT WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN.
April is the time of the year were "puppies" are born and all over the place. Great time to visit and see them in action according to our guide. This time, we will venture the waters on our own and enjoy the place at our own pace and leisure.
I put a limit of 20 people, but if more people want to come, I am pretty sure they will accommodate us.
Elkhorn Slough is one of the last coastland wetlands in California. Located on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, 3.5 miles from Moss Landing, it has been described in the San Francisco Chronicle as the best place for wildlife viewing along the length of California Highway 1.
We will meet at the Kayak Connection at 2370 Highway 1 Moss Landing, CA[masked] for Kayaking at ELKHORN SLOUGH.
Kayak Connection on the Elkhorn Slough offers closed deck kayak rentals to all skill levels. Due to the calm nature of the waters of the Slough no experience is necessary for taking out a kayak to visit the otters and harbor seals.
All prices include a lifejacket-- required for all renters-- paddle and paddling jacket.
Cost: $35 for a single. $55 for a double. You must let the instructor know if you are interested in renting a double or single kayak and are looking.
The first thing we will do is sign a liability release and pay for our rentals. We will then watch a short safety video about the area. The staff will then help us get the correct gear and show us how to wear it properly. After a safety and paddle talk by a staff member we will be taken to the dock and helped into our kayaks.
What to Bring/Wear
You will get a lifejacket, paddling jacket, sprayskirt and paddle. Try to avoid wearing jeans or sweats. They suggest dressing in layers of fleece, wool, capilene or synthetic clothing. Weather conditions can change quickly on the water and you are better off with too many layers then being cold!
They recommend that we bring:
• TOWEL... You may get wet :) AND GLOVES, GLOVES, GLOVES!
•A hat and sunglasses, water goggles if you were contact lenses and are concerned of falling into the water... not to worry, we promise to fish you out of it.
•Water and a snack (will eat at Phil's later)
•Camera and/or binoculars
•Waterproof shoes, change of shoes for later, etc...
After kayaking we will go to Phil's for lunch in Moss Landing.
