WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU ENJOYED AN OUTDOOR FIRE IN THE COMPANY OF FRIENDS, DRINKING, EATINS S'MORES, HAVING GREAT CONVERSATIONS AND LAUGHING?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

At Pinnacles, there are two 'cave trails' (Balconies Cave Trail and Bear Gulch Cave Trail) that require flashlight.  We will do the easier Balconies Cave Trail on Saturday and Bear Gulch + High Peaks hike (medium to strenuous) on Sunday.

In between caving and hiking, we will gather around a warm bonfire, drink in one hand, s'more in the other while chatting and laughing until  bedtime.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directions from the North: WE ARE MEETING ON THE EAST ENTRANCE SIDE!!

When driving to Pinnacles National Park, please keep in mind that there is no road that connects the east and west entrances of the park. The shortest route from the east entrance to the west entrance (or from west to east) is through the town of King City on Hwy 101.

From the San Francisco Bay Area: Take Hwy 101 south through the city of Gilroy to Hwy 25 south. On Hwy 25, go through the town of Hollister and continue about 30 miles to Hwy 146. Turn right on Hwy 146, then turn left into the Pinnacles Campground to check in at Pinnacles Visitor Center. From the campground, the Bear Gulch Area is 3.5 miles further into the park along Hwy 146.

From the South: Take Hwy 101 North to the town of King City. Exit at 1st Street. Turn right toward King City. Continue straight until 1st St turns into Bitterwater Rd (Monterey County G13). Follow Bitterwater Rd until it intersects Hwy 25. Turn left on Hwy 25 (North) and follow for ~15 miles. Turn left onto Hwy 146 to enter the monument. Turn left into the Pinnacles Campground and check in at Pinnacles Visitor Center. The Bear Gulch Area is 3.5 miles further into the park along Hwy. 146.

There is only room for 20 people to spend the night. Extra people can stay for extra fee.

Fees: Expenses incurred for the reservation of the site will be divided among those attending. I expect somewhere between $6-10 plus park entrance fee. If I cook the beans for everyone, I may add a couple of dollars to the fees.

Park Entry Fee: $5.00 per car

WHAT TO BRING: I will send a personal email to the members attending this event with specific information.

                                                       THE HIKES

SATURDAY HIKE - MUST BRING FLASHLIGHT/HEADLAMP TO ENTER THE CAVES (Bring extra batteries)

Difficulty: easy-moderate

Miles: Approx. 6 miles plus climbing inside the caves. This will give us time to set up camp later on.

Elevation: 500 ft

Trails:

From Old Pinnacles Trailhead, follow Old Pinnacles Trail (2.3 miles) → left on Balconies Cave Trail (0.4 miles) → right on Balconies Cliffs Trail (0.8 miles) → left on Old Pinnacles Trail (2.3 miles).

--------------------------------------------------------------

SUNDAY HIKE: MUST BRING FLASHLIGHT/HEADLAMP TO ENTER THE CAVES (Bring extra batteries)

Hiking through Caves

This hike goes through only one of these caves: Bear Gulch Cave. The caves are open only in select months, so check Cave Status. Caves are closed for the protection of Townsend's big ear bats that reside in them. Caves are open for a limited period: twice an year for at least one week and up to four weeks each March and October, depending on the presence of the colony of bats. At this time, caves are open or partially open, as I checked this morning.

Miles: approx. 10 miles

Elevation: approx. 2,600 ft

Trails: We will start from the Old  Pinnacles Trailhead, close to the campground

From Old Pinnacles Trailhead, follow High Peaks Trail (2.0 miles) → left on Condor Gulch Trail (1.7 miles) to reach Bear Gulch Day Use Area. Follow Bear Gulch Trail (0.5 miles) → Bear Gulch Cave Trail (0.7 miles) to reach Bear Gulch Reservoir. Follow Rim Trail (0.4 miles) → left on High Peaks Trail (4.8 miles) to return to trailhead.

Just spent the last 2 hours looking for my wallet. FINALLY found it. The VERY last place to look after tearing up my car, house and every place that I'd been for the last 12 hours. Will arrive between 6-7:30. Save me a burnt hot dog, OK?

Love to go with you, but will be at Pinnacles the following week! Love to hear your status on the BearGulch Caves, ie how wet, waterfall status, etc. Our group is anticpating we might be negotiating several inches of water is some parts of the bearGulch Caves.

btw~ I've heard there's no cell reception, and texting is iffy at the Pinnacles. Have fun , it's an amazing place to hike/camp !!

    Couple of things:
Please, send me your private email (privately, do not post it here) and POST here anything you can share with the group. Everyone should have their own sleeping bags and personal thingys. We need a stove to heat up water for coffee/tea… I'll try and make a pot of beans (if I have time and a good recipe) but will need to be reheated.
Breakfast can be simple: coffee/tea, "breaddy" items, fruits, cereal… etc . We can each bring something to share.

    March 23

    • Patricia W.

I don't know if it's a two-person tent but I am very happy to have you, Elena.

I'm brining a small Gas grill, 2 Cooler, 2 Chairs. I have an extra sleeping bag or two if anyone needs one.

Can I please share with someone, I don't snore, burp, or fart.

I propose to take one row of seats out of the van and take 3 people along with camping gear and lots of wood. You can park your cars on my drive in Los Gatos, or I could meet you close to where 85 meets Los Gatos Blvd ... you could park at Good Samaritan's huge car park, for example. Glad to pick up anybody that's on the way from there. Any takers?

The flashlights are for the caves guys! I have all the camping gear. I have a large tent and a cozy one. I have an extra airbed. I have sleeping bags. Anybody (Patricia) that needs stuff let me know. Who's bringing the guitar so we can sing campfire songs ... once an Austrian went yodeling on a mountain so high ... ? Oh and it's a long way let's carpool ... willing to take the van and party on the way down and back ... maybe I should post a meetup for the van ... : ) If Roman sleeps in the van the park police won't count him, but what about the NSA?? Are we supposed to bring wood?

    2 · February 4

    • Patricia W.

Yes, Andy. Can I borrow these from you? My first camping. If I like camping, I will invest these for my next camping. :-) Love the car pool idea too.

    March 5

    • Nieves

You are welcome. Not sure about the cooking part. It depends on what " camping tools" we can all contribute… I have zero so far :( We will post what we need to bring and more about the trails in a couple of weeks. Maybe we can meet at my place to discuss details :)

    Hello Fellow Campers,
I want to let you know that although we will be camping - meaning spending the night over there, the primary purpose is to hike and explore the caves. There is quite a lot of climbing inside the caves, very tight spaces and complete darkness. We will hike on Sat. before we set up camp way into the afternoon.
On Sunday, we will do a hike that requires a lot of climbing at high altitude.
PLEASE, if you have not done any hiking before, I will ask that you do not try this event.
I will feel the need to make a choice at the end of whom I think should come based on their hiking experience with us.
I really hope I do not offend anyone, but I need to make sure we have a clear understanding as to what this event implies and what the expectations are in terms of physical condition and preparation.
    Thanks!
