EXTRA BOOK "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson

You asked for it and POOF!  Your wish is granted...the FIRST EXTRA BOOK MEETUP OF THE NEW YEAR....

We will be discussing "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America" by Erik Larson.

Good Reads says:

Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that 'The Devil in the White City' is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor.

Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison.

The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims

I really liked this book. This is my first meeting. I'm reading his next one set in pre WWII Germany. Non-fiction written like fiction. Look forward to meeting some of you. Beth

This is quite a story! For those who won't have time to read it hopefully you'll get the chance. I never knew about this very dramatic time in Chicago's history. I started several friends on reading it now too. Very worthwhile!

I haven't read the book yet. Just got it last week and have been swamped. I've never participated in a book group. Would it be a total waste of everyone's time if I showed up but hadn't finished the book?

    March 24, 2014

    • Shannon C.

It is not a requirement to finish the book in this group! Ever! You are welcome to come and enjoy the discussion! Just be forewarned that we will be discussing the entire book so there may be "Spoilers". (If it makes you feel any better... I am in the same boat as you are... Totally swamped and I haven't started book yet!) Looking forward to meeting you!

OH NO! I was just updating my calendar and realized this is the weekend of my annual knitting retreat (usually in May). Feel free to carry on without me. I am still reading the book. Don't want to cause any trouble, but wondering if it would be possible to reschedule for March 23rd or April 6th? If not, no worries, just thought I'd ask.

The meet up is already on the 30th. I am confused.

Sorry. My post started the confusion. Keep it on the 30th. I'll read along anyway :)

I signed up for this because I like the day of the week, the location, and the time. It would be fine with me if it were rescheduled for April 6.

A nonfiction book? I'm so there, that is if I get the book in time (am 14th in line at the library) and if I wind up being free as the meetup is a week before my play opens. Hope to make it.

It is an amazing book, read it when it was new. It is a long book and meaty, so plan some time to get through it.
