Nestled in California's oldest state park, this popular hike begins at the Big Basin park headquarters and takes us to two beautiful waterfalls: Golden Falls and SIlver Falls. You will truly enjoy this hike!

Getting there:
From I-280 in Santa Clara County, exit onto CA 85 south. After about 4.5 miles, exit #14 onto Saratoga Avenue. Drive west about 2 miles into Saratoga and the junction with Saratoga-Sunnyvale, then continue straight on Big Basin Way/CA 9. Drive uphill on 9 for about 7 miles to the Saratoga Gap intersection (junction of 9 and CA 35), then continue straight on CA 9. Drive downhill on 9 for 6 miles to a stop sign, then continue straight onto CA 236. Proceed on this narrow winding road for 8.5 miles to the park headquarters (left) and parking lots (right).

DISTANCE: 10 miles

ELEVATION: 2,200 ft

DIFFICULTY: moderate with some strenuous areas. Not a hike for beginners!

LUNCH: We'll eat, rest, and put our feet in the water at the SILVER WATERFALLS resting point while enjoying the views. If you are brave enough, you can go down the waterfalls and enjoy the refreshing water soothing your feet!

TRAIL ROUTE:

Big Basin and the waterfalls were gorgeous! Thanks to Nieves for organizing and to John for leading the hike. Special shout out to all those caring souls who helped me make it to the end--you're all angels! (Mark, bless you for carrying my pack on the last leg--it made all the difference!) Thanks for the rides Paul and Christina. . . . Now I know, 7 mile moderate hike GOOD, 10 mile strenuous hike, not so much! Thanks to all the photographers for sharing.

Karen, you did your best and never complained. You attitude was great and we all help each other. See you next event and hope also for future hike, ie: possibly less than 10 mile :)

      June 29

  • Nieves

Thank you guys for enduring this "longer than our usual" hike. I'd been wanting to do this loop for a while and while planning it, I did not realize that the second part was a bit more "uphilly" than what I like… Good exercise, though, and we should all be proud we did it. Great views of the falls and conversations.
Thanks for the posts and the photos :) Next hike will be under 10 miles, I promise :)

Wait Nieves, I thought we are doing a 15-mile hike next time, no? (just kidding ;-)

I meant "thanks for the 'potos'" … Yup, we are going to run a few miles with this joke :)

      June 29

  • Susan

Dear Sammy, I don't have any "potos", but I will work on my photo images :-)

You have no potos?!!! good eyes Susan!

    • Nieves

So… I guess that now we will have to call you guys "potographers" instead… I like it, it has a Spanish ring to it :)

I just found out i had to go out of town tomorrow morning. I'm very disapponted i'm going to miss this hike.

    June 27

  • Karen D.

Oops. Meant to say there is construction on Hwy 9 near Saratoga Springs and there is only one lane open. Delay will probably be at least 10 minutes.

    June 27

  • Karen D.

I'll be in front of Starbucks at 8am and have 2 more seats in my car. Again very little parking in front of Gene's Market and no place to gather. Lots of parking on the left side of Starbucks.

    June 27

  • Karen D.

Gene's Market is just 1 block off Saratoga Ave and 3 blocks North of Hwy 85. Lots of parking, a Starbucks, Deli, Prolific Oven, and of course anything you need at Gene's. It would be a straight shot from there through the city of Saratoga and up Hwy 9 to get to Big Basin.

    • Lorette

I'll be at gene's at 8. Looking for a shotgun seat for that windy road!

      June 27

Lorette you can ride with me. I can also take 2 more.

I will be at the carpool location, 800. I will drive myself as I have other commitments in the eve so I won't be able to stay for early dinner, I would like to follow people as I've never been there. I could take one or two people if they were not staying as well. See you all tomorrow

    June 27

  • Paul

I will be at the carpool location and can take 3 or ride with someone that likes to drive.

For this hike, please, make sure you bring plenty of water, layered clothing, sturdy shoes. and plenty of snacks to eat, We will stop by the Silver Waterfalls to eat lunch. Some of us will go down the fall to enjoy putting our feet in the cold water while eating. Bring a small towel just in case. We will then climb towards the gorgeous Golden Falls. Again, this is not a hike for beginners. Soooo looking forward to this hike :)
