HIKE - Castle Rock

The date has changed from 10/7/12 to 10/27/12 - all other information has stayed the same

Distance:  4.7 mile loop

Duration:  3 -4 Hours

Difficulty:  Moderate

Elevation Gain:  Approximately 1,000 feet

Along the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountain, Castle Rock State Park embraces coast redwood, Douglas-fir, and Madrone forests, most of which has been left in its wild, natural state.  Steep canyons are sprinkled with unusual rock formations that are popular with rock climbers. Castle Rock State Park 3,214 foot high point, is a sandstone formation that appeals to rock climbers, geologist and photographers.  A thick evergreen forest obstructs the view from Castle Rock. Much better panoramas are to be had atop Goat Rock, a sandstone outcropping that offers hikers clear-day views of the San Lorenzo Valley and Pacific Ocean.  the trails are narrow, the drop offs sharp, and some of the trails can be slippery.  Although most to the trails are straightforward, some segments are somewhat technical.  It's a tought place for knees and hips, as you must scramble up and down some boulders and navigate steep santstone shoots.  This doesn't mean you shouldn't go!!! The views form Saratoga Gap  and Ridge Trails are worth a few sore muscles. If you are in average shape, you can do it! We'll set an easy pace and promise to leave no one behind.

From CA 85 in Santa Clara County, exit Saratoga Avenue. Drive west into Saratoga, then continue uphil on CA 9.  At Junction 9 and CA 35, turn left and drive south about 2.5 miles to the park entrance on the right side of the road. You can park either in the State Parks parking lot or along side of the road just out side the parks entrance.

Pack a substantial lunch. We'll stop somewhere in the middle for a well needed break, eat, visit with each other, and enjoy the surronding views.

Because there is a maximum attendence for this meetup, please do not sign up unless you are actually going to attend. Do not sign up to hold a spot...please. Not fair to others who would like to attend. If you sign up and you become unable to attend, please change your RSVP to "not attending" to allow those on the waiting list to move up and make plans.

Looks like we are going to have great weather! You may want to bring a box or plastic bag to put your shoes in after the hike. It might still be a little muddy from the last rain. Remember to bring lunch. We'll stop along the way for a bit to sit, chat, and eat. We're not going to lunch after the hike like we usually do. If some of you want to, feel free. Meet in the main parking lot near the restrooms. Looking forward to seeing everyone. It's going to be a beautiful day.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
