Riverbend Park, Jupiter - 5.5 Miles

  • Jan 19, 2014 · 9:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Lets meet at the Riverbend parking lot. This 5.5 mile hike will start at the Entrance Kiosk which is topped with Chickee Thatch. It's a theme that you will see throughout the park.
Lots of chickee thatch kiosks, plenty of trail signs, small and big chickee huts and several portable toilets at different locations. Trail maps can usually be found on the wall outside of the Park Office.
The Seminole theme pays homage to the historical and archaeological significance of this site. This is a sacred ground, with a Seminole Encampment and an open green field, recalling the Battle of the Loxahatchee, Jan. 28, 1838, when Federal Troops attempted to move the Seminole from this region to the West.

Riverbend Park has been more then a decade in the making and now that it is open, the 680 acre preserve is an ideal destination for hikers who want a taste of the wilds of South Florida without getting their feet wet.. More then 15 miles of interconnected trails and roads make up the Trail Network. The hiking trails are engineered broad walkways of compacted limestone and sea shells. Together, the Trail signs, Kiosks and Trail Maps make it nearly impossible to get lost. Although, It is Nature Tamed, you can see wildlife, including deer, birds and alligators. There are also miles of equestrian trails and some of the trails are shaded by tall trees. The above  lower photo is of a baby alligator in the Loxahatchee River that I took on a previous hike at Riverbend.

The park is open Sunrise to one hour before Sunset daily. Trails which are fortified with crushed limerock are shared with bicycles.
An Outfitter at the Entrance to the Park rents Canoes and Kayaks for paddling the Loxahatchee River. Bicycles can also be rented. The Outfitter also sells cold drinks, snacks and nature books, etc.

Lets meet at 9:15 am in the parking lot, and sign-in by printing and signing our names on the "Release of Liability" form.

Please bring lunch, snacks, sunscreen, a smile and at least 1 liter of water (= 2 x 16 oz.).  We will be hiking at an easy pace, enjoying the sights and sounds of Riverbend Park. Rain cancels. If unsure of weather, call Dennis at[masked]-7221.  It is suggested that you wear a hat and appropriate footwear.
Please read my short note on Heat and Dehydration (dated Oct. 10, 2013) under the "Discussions" tab at the top of this page.

See you at the Park,  Dennis

Directions: I-95 exit 87B  or Turnpike exit 116 West which is Indiantown Rd. Continue west on Indiantown Rd. about a mile to the park entrance on the left side.
