Pre Christmas Hike - The Washburn Preserve @ Stony Creek

Shoreline Greenway – The Washburn Preserve, a 20-acre parcel along the waters of a tidal creek and Long Island Sound with views out to the Thimble Islands.

Jim Paine, one of our members is an avid hiker and led us on our first hike at Trolley Trail. If you want to see how much fun we had and see some of the beautiful scenery, check out the Shoreline hike we took on November 30th with Jim.  There maybe snow on the ground so dress accordingly and be sure your fit enough to make the hike.  It will be along an easy trail but the wet leaves and grounds will be slippery.

The journey to Washburn begins at the Weil Preserve in the quaint and picturesque Stony Creek section of Branford. A mix of trails marked with blue blazes and the white/red dot Branford Trail take visitors from the hustle and bustle of Stony Creek deep into the woods past stone walls and under huge trees. The briny scent of Long Island Sound hits
your senses first and then a view of marsh grass peeks through as the forest
opens up.

Take a moment to get your bearings and look to the north, where a seemingly endless marsh – making its annual change from green to golden brown – meets an old railroad bridge. A view to the south showcases the "Bear Island" Thimble, the sparkling waters of
Long Island Sound and a trail bridge spanning the horizon.

The bridge takes visitors across the marsh to several islands of pitch pine and scrub oak. Those million-dollar views of Long Island Sound that you don't think you have access to? They are here, as each view showcases the beauty of the rocky shoreline. The path
continues over another, more rustic bridge and snakes past beautiful rock formations to a tunnel underneath the railroad where Amtrak's Acela and passenger trains fly past mere feet away.

The Washburn Preserve has the ghostly ruins of the Branford Granite Company, an old quarry that had its heyday in the 1800s, and the old trolley bed. A swath of old quarry tailings acts as a path to the old railway that once took trolleys along a 50-mile route from Stony Creek west to New Haven and east to Chester.

The remainder of the preserve is the old quarry hole with water lilies and fallen leaves decorating its surface.  Unmarked trails take visitors to the top of the quarry with stunning views of the Sound and some of the best sounding Thimbles – Cut-In-Two Island East and
Cut-In-Two Island West.

Weather updates will be posted as date nears.

We’ll meet at the Stony Creek entrance (same as the Trolley Trail hike meeting place) and depart around 10 a.m. ~  Take exit 56 off of I-95 and turn south on Leete’s Island Road. At stop sign at intersection near liquor store, take Thimble Island Road, continuing south towards the water. After crossing under RR tracks, take first right onto West Point Road. Park at ball field and we'll pack in a few cars and drive to the Washburn trail as there is limited parking at Washburn.

We’ll find a comfortable place nearby for lunch (around noon),  for those that want to join us.

Please reach out to one another about carpooking since I'm not going.  I'm going to try to make the dance but it's iffy!

Jim is out doing a pre hike walk and says there's a little snow on the ground but the area is beautiful. Sue will be the co host, both Sue and Jim have the list of members attending.

I have made lunch reservations for 12:15 for those of you who would like to have lunch together at The Chowder Pot, 560 E Main St, Branford. We had lunch there after out first hike. They will do separate checks, just be sure to tip the server nicely. I'm hoping to feel better to join you for the dance, but still uncertain of that. Have fun and be sure you have the correct gear!

Rather than invest in expensive, often used, rugged ones, for typical MeetUp hikes/walks, I found the inexpensive "Ocean State Job Lot" ones adequate on the rare occasions I needed to use them. One time a couple fellow hikers poked fun at me for wearing them along w/ using a pair (also OSJL $15/pair) of Trek Poles... they stopped laughing after they slipped into an icy cold stream, whereas I didn't! (And "no" I didn't push them! I actually offered to pass my poles across the stream to them, but they refused. Oh, well!)

Is it necessary to have these grips on your hiking shoes for this hike? I need to know because I don't have any and will buy some this week.

I wore them one day while working for UPS in the icy snow and my legs were killing me at the end of the day. A two hour hike I don't know, but I got rid of mine. Wearing boots that are like hiking boots but warmer.

Weather update for Saturday ~ 47 degrees and cloudy with only a 10% chance of rain. Keeping fingers crossed it will be another nice day like it was for the Trolley Trail hike.

I bought those things that go on your hiking boots to grip the snow, a new set of gloves and ear Warner's, I'm read to go! Any questions about where to meet, please email Jim Paine.
