Are you a FIAT Owner is Southern California?

If you are then this event may be for you!

We are starting off the new year with a fun run through the canyons of So Cal. Here is the tentative schedule:

Sunday February 16, 2014

8:30AM - Meet up at MADNESS for Coffee, Donuts and Socializing. Come out and join us for a casual morning. We will host coffee and donuts at our location. Registers are closed, this is for fun only!

9:30AM - Depart MADNESS on our way to La Canada Flintridge Area. This drive will take approximately 40 minutes. We will meet up with a group of other FIAT Owners from the La Canada Flintridge Area at 10:15-10:30 at a designated location below:

Anytime Fitness
890 Town Center Drive
La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011

10:30AM - Depart for the drive from the La Canada Flintridge Location for the run. Maps will be passed out at the location. No details on the location of the drive will be disclosed prior to this time. We will have a short drivers meeting and get on our way.

The run will be a spirited run through the canyons. For those of you that like to really drive your FIAT and enjoy spirited driving this will be a fantastic time! We have driven this route and REALLY enjoyed the time.

The group will be split in two for safety and enjoyment. Those that are more experienced with canyon driving and like spirited driving and those that like to drive at a slower pace and enjoy more of the scenery that is around.

The run will take approximately 2-3 hours. We have a place reserved for lunch at which we will stop around 1-2 PM. This stop is optional and not mandatory. You may choose to have lunch with us or leave at this point.

After lunch we will have an optional additional drive for those that want a little more. Details will follow.

To sum it all up... If you are in the Southern California Area and would like to take your FIAT on a fun, spirited run we invite you to join us. Please RSVP on this MeetUp Event Page. If you know of any other FIAT owner that would like to come out for the day direct them to join this MeetUp Group and RSVP. We must have you RSVP so we can plan for refreshments, donuts and directions.

We look forward to having you join us!

Fantastic day. Great people. Hot Fiats. Dan did a wonderful job setting up this event. Even reserved an entire banquet room at Dennys and kudos go to the Staff at Dennys as well. Great service from them all. Madness management and staff held up their end and deserve all the credit for a job well done. Thanks from myself and my daughter for a most wonderful day and cruise thru the Canyons at the Angeles National Forest. Looking forward to next months Lake Run. Well worth the trip from Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Nevada Highway Patrol stopped me just before arriving in Vegas and ticketed me for 92 over 70. Certainly cant afford this ticket. Guess I will contact "Ticket Busters", don't want this on my record.

Fun drive today but some ideas for the next one to help us "non-spirited" and 75% drivers who got lost on the way to Denny's. I'm assuming you don't post the route before the drive for safety reasons but can we get the route emailed the night before? Personally I like maps better than written directions and could print them out for myself beforehand. Also, could an organizer or assistant organizer drop back towards the back of the pack to make sure no one gets lost? Thanks, and looking forward to many more drives!

great job! I'm not sure if Map My Run app could keep up with you, but, if it could you could open the app...take the run...and then you could save it for easy directions. Still, it was a FREAKING FANTASTIC DAY!!

Thanks Boris! I'll definitely fix some of those embarrassing nav mistakes for next time. I do know those roads well, but the new restaurant mixed me up just a bit...confused myself on the first approached to San Francisquito. Derp. Also, no more omissions! Linked maps by email or in the event might be good too, as suggested by others.

  • Michael G.

Great. Loads of fun. Thanks to Melvin and Rodney for the help with my car. I took it to Walter's Fiat this morning. Turns out I blew out a plug, causing a vacuum leak. Easy fix. Car is running great again.

    1 · February 17

  • James

Thanks for organizing and navigating this Dan! Got to see lots of cool roads I had never been on and somehow I managed to keep up!

    3 · February 16

    • SpacePod G.

Thanks. I'll do a better job with the nav next time. I got turned-around somehow coming from Castaic, missing Rye Canyon to San Fran the first time and the omission of 'Rye Canyon Left' from the directions (back to Chili's) really didn't help those who got separated. Separation isn't so bad if people have correct directions. ;)

But yesh, you're welcome and I'm sorry haha. Hope you enjoyed the roads!

      February 17

  • Eric & K.

What fun. All the interesting people and their beautiful Fiats. The first part was fantastic, only lost couple of cars, the 2nd leg allowed some of us to enjoy Palmdale... Twice. What happened to the re-group? And then there were three, driving along "for a while" and hoping that Soledad Canyon actually turned into Valencia Blvd at some point as it "goes for a ways", slowing down to check street signs "for a few miles"! Jeesh, hate to be the fly in the ointment, but has anyone ever heard of "mileage" or "Distance" or "for about 20 minutes" or"landmarks"? Anything objective. How about an actual map on the back, contact numbers to all, not just some. Who knows who will need assistance. Kudos to those who thought about bailing for the freeway but didn't. And special thanks to my navigator who made it right, like she always does, and to my fellow Fiat troopers who stuck with us. I'll drive with you anytime, anywhere! You were awesome, positive, and made our adventure the fun outing it was supposed to be.

It was the first full run that Dan put together and overall it was a great job. He did take some pointers on the issues and agreed with the suggestions and will take those in to consideration when planning future events.

      2 · February 17

    • SpacePod G.

You have every right to be annoyed. While I know that Soledad Canyon turns into Valencia..others may lose-hope if no approximate mileage is listed. I'll probably add-in landmarks so people know they're on the right track.

The biggest problem (besides not trusting myself to stay on Rye Canyon on the way to San Fran and making a wrong turn) was the omission of 'Rye Canyon Left' from the directions to Chili's (final destination). For this, I'm very sorry and that was just a mistake that I'll be sure doesn't happen again. Also, I'll be sure to include the address for the final destination next time so people can get their by GPS if they become separated from the group. Finally, the idea of a map route is a good idea, but it adds a second page to the instructions...but it sounds like it'll be well-worth it. The other thing we could do is just make it available via Google link here in the meetup, and those who want to print it can do just that. Thanks again!

It was a great day. Enjoyed meeting new people and seeing so many wonderful cars. The roads selected for the run were a lot of fun. Many thanks to Dan for all his hard work setting it up. I'm sure much more goes into doing something like this than most of us realize. Also, thanks to Boris and all the folks at Madness for their role in making this a special event. Look forward to many more.

      February 17

Thanks. For sure the nav mistakes I made will be fixed for next time, so even if people lose the main group they will be able to GPS the final meet-point.

      1 · February 17

  • SpacePod G.

The navigator has to learn how to frackin' navigate. Also, omitted turn in directions to Chili's. 100 lashes with a FIAT wiper-blade shall commence!

You did a great job and don't beat yourself up over a couple of issues too much. It will get better and better.

      February 17

  • SpacePod G.

Hey everyone. Hope you enjoyed the ride. What I am sure you didn't enjoy was me missing Parker Rd. coming back from Denny's, the false start to San Fran (and circuitous loop) and worst of all, omitting 'Rye Canyon LEFT' from the directions to get to Chili's. Oh, and not listing the Chili's address didn't help. Sheesh, I am sorry for that. I'll be sure to correct those errors for next time. Normally, I don't go way out to Castaic to eat and somehow I got turned-around...because I'm a freakin' idiot. ;)

Anyhoot, I hope you enjoyed the drive. Sorry for any inconvenience with the navigation. Next time I'll give my number to a few people in B group as well so people in the back can call me if they're stuck or lost. Another member also brought up the idea of walkie-talkies. Another good idea.

I have a 500e and am coming down from Los Angeles. Will I have enough range with a full charge to complete the run??

    February 13

    • SpacePod G.

Wow, that's an interesting question. What's the range on your 500e? This is exactly the type of thing that electric cars aren't very good at (yet). However, maybe you can plug-in at the various stop points? The infrastructure isn't really there yet, and charge-times are still kinda slow, granted. Still, an electric FIAT. How awesome is that? This is a very interesting question though, and if you show up I'd love to do a quick interview of you for my MotoVlog!

Is anyone aware of the closure of part of the 405 freeway that weekend ( jamzilla ). I believe it's starts from the Getty to somewhere In Studio City. I am not sure if we would be affected by this or not ?

    January 16, 2014

    • SpacePod G.

Yes, aware of this, but ignoring it and hoping it's not an issue! :> The 405 will be most affected, so allow more time if you need to take the 405. The good thing is, it shouldn't be too bad on a Sunday morning.

The La Canada meet-point will be at Anytime Fitness in their sizable parking lot, due to the sheer size of this group. Thanks to Eric Elzer for pointing this out, since I normally just meet at the Shell station, but failed to see how large the group had gotten. Anytime Fitness is here: Anytime Fitness
    890 Town Center Drive
    La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011

It's close to the Shell station and without any fancy maneuvers, lights or u-turns...so people who need gas can easily get gas before the meet. Please show up gassed-up since we won't be stopping on the way out. I'll be getting gas on-arrival just so I don't have to think about it (especially if we're driving sportingly). ;)

Will bring notes about checkpoints for those who want to plug it into their GPS or go analog with paper and such. Dan

Howdy! This is gonna be great. So many FIATS coming, woot! Just wanted to mention, please gas up at the LaCanada meetup location or at the lunch stop (which has several gas stations nearby). The run from the ACH start location to lunch is the meat of the run and you'll want a full tank or close to it. For the optional secondary run, you may want to top off near the lunch area anyway, especially if you're driving in a sporting fashion. Basically, this is just a heads-up so nobody has to make gas-stops outside of these known-good locations for gassing-up, especially with so many cars. Looking forward to it!

We have had some folks ask if there is a place to meet up for those that live in the La Canada Area and north of LA prior to the run instead of driving to our location at MADNESS and then caravaning back up.

To answer your question... Yes. We will have a meet up spot that will be announced prior to the start of the run for those that wish to meet us in the La Canada Area. You will have two choices:

    1. Meet us for coffee, juice, donuts and socializing at MADNESS first and enjoy the drive over in a looong caravan on 500 cars going down the fwy.

    2. Meet us at the La Canada Area. We will have a second meet up there for about 15-30 minutes. Once the group from our MADNESS location arrives we will socialize for about 15 minutes and then all of us will take off together.

Hope that helps a bit.... More info will come as we get closer.
