NOTE: If Tourney is all booked up, still get on the Wait List and do feel free to come on by anyway for pre-, during-, and post- Tourney side cashgames [and who knows you might be able to sneak into the Tourney, too, (IF there are tourney no-shows, only)].

LOOK >>> Some DETAILS OF THE THURS. 514 MEETUPS have been Revised.
Re-read the Discussion Forums for some reminders of some general poker etiquette PLUS some House Rules. The Host is serious about Show One Person/Show All People, about Do Not Go Through The Muck, about not talking about the board or potential hands with action in play (even afterwards, commenting on people's strategies, etc, is frowned upon). Also, if you fold, toss your cards into the muck, and leave them there.
There will be some co- Tournament Managers who will help the Host run the tourney.
Check in with the money collector starting at 6:30; Rich or some other designee will be collecting for the tourney and distributing seating cards. Do not wait until the last minute or you could lose your spot at the tourney tables.
Feel free to throw a pizza or whatever in the oven or burgers on the grill, too. Or teach me how to make a healthy vegan meal. Put your BYOB in the fridge or cooler. Bring a friend or two, even if they just wanna hang out and eat and drink and play pool and listen to music and banter. Contact Curt if you're going to be over earlier than 6:00 for food prep.
Site donation : $1. It goes for Meetup fees, supplies like cards and chips, prizes, utilities, and/or future tables. Thank you. Please be concientious. Host invests his money on 514...
Also, be sure to put $1 in the RCC if you take a soda or water, and do contribute snacks; RCC donations sans consumption are also welcome. If you'd like to have beer or other alcoholic beverages, Bring Your Own. (Don't drink to the point of being obnoxious, please; only the Host is allowed to do that.) sort of NEW>> Note: moving back towards BYOB and BYO Snacks/"pot luck" Snacks. Host has a few last sodas and waters to sell, but once those are gone Host generally will provide a cooler and hopefully some ice for you to store or share drinks.
Pre-tourney Cash Game starts 6:00 or so. (I won't necessarily play in earlier cash, but I will if I have time... but others are welcome, no problem... we have enough tables for more than one cashgame, btw, so if one is full just form another.) Indicate in your RSVP if you intend to participate.
No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tourney starts promptly at 8p.m., Blinds rise 20 mins first three levels, then every 15 minutes once antes kick in and for the remainder. $10 buy-in, NEW > 2350 chips (10 each of Red and White, 8 Green; 10 Black; 2 Gold); one Black Chip Penalty if not in seat at 7:55; one possible re-buy (NEW > 2000 chips = 1 Red, 2 White, 7 Green, 8 Black, 2 Gold) for another $10 if busted out in first hour and thirty minutes, before the short break.
Late Arrival Policy: If you enter the tourney after the first hand has begun and before the break is over, your initial buy-in will be for 2000 chips; you can still exercise your rebuy rights as described above if you're in before the break. (if you're later than that, feel free to come and pass some time playing some pool or starting up a side cash game that people can join as they get felted from the tourney.)
Depending on number of people, Tourney finishes by about 12:00, sometimes slightly earlier or slightly later. Some people work in the morning, and the Tourney accomodates.
NOTE: If you RSVP "Yes" but then cannot make it, change your RSVP to "No" as soon as you know, so that waiting list tourney players can know they have a have a spot. >>> Consistent no-shows without RSVP change leads to ban from 514 Poker League.<<<
Pre- and/or post-tourney cash side games have become a tradition. We have been starting $10 buy-in cash games at 6:00 or so... Tourney (prompt 8p.m. start) players knocked-out often play pool and/or play a side cash game with others knocked-out. Cash games have been .25/.50 No Limit Holdem, $10 buy in. Buy in for as little as $5 and as much as $15. $10 is standard. You can rebuy if you run out in cash game, or between hands; while you are in a hand, you play with what you have on the table. Between hands, you can recharge up to $15, if you desire. Post-Tourney cash game can go on until perhaps 2a.m. sometimes, but can leave earlier if you want, no problem.
The play has been fun and competitive with some strong players, so it'll keep you on your toes and strengthen your game. There's a core group of players and new players keep showing up almost every time. Note: We seek to remain friendly so attempts at cheating or collusion won't make you friends here. So relax and have fun.
You should play poker with the 514 if you're a friendly, tolerant, smart and fun-seeking hobbyist poker player who seeks a safe and relaxed-but-competitive home-game poker night on a regular basis in Pasadena. If you're a proker pro, well, then come just to show us how it's done.
If you want a good reason to " get out of the house" and rub elbows with a group of interesting men and women so far ranging in age from about 20 to 60+ , the 514 Poker League of Pasadena might just suit you nicely.
There will be no pressure to drink or anything else, so sober play is welcome if you are so inclined. If you want to drink, that's fine too as long as it doesn't get out of hand or obnoxious... we want to keep this thing pleasant.
Minimum age to play poker is 18, and minimum age to drink alcohol has to be 21. No smoking in house, but outside is tolerated as long as you're courteous about your second-hand smoke. Do NOT toss your cig butts on the ground, though; it's a pet-peeve of mine. Any use of hard drugs merits immediate expulsion from the grounds and from 514 League.
Come early and make some dinner or snacks if you want; use of the kitchen and the bbq is not only permitted... it is encouraged! Contact Curt, Organizer, if arriving before 5:45 p.m.
So let's shuffle up and deal!
Let us welcome a newly born verb into the English language: joe. Def: joe- to take a stack of chips off a victim through systematic use of sneaky cards. Usage: when being knocked out by Joe, Joe's opponent may say, "I've just been joed." or, alternatively and more informally, "I got joed, damnit."... when about to employ said sneaky tactics, one may say, so as to intimidate the opponent: "I'm about to joe you." or, alternatively and more informally, "I'm gonna joe ya." origin: Original Joe
I've been Joed damit on more than one occassion, however, I've Joed a few people as well... Heehee
Hi, my name is John, and yes I've been Joe'd ..hey, Chel - sounds like a new line of business for you ..a support group for those unfortunate souls that have been Joe'd and Joe'd again. I've tried to quit but it's not easy, you know.
Grrrrrreat idea! I'll give you a discount John for coming up with it! ;)
Yup. I went all in as a short stack with my pocket 9's last week... I got Joe'd out by... Well, by Joe. Damn.
I have been joed by the original Joe. It was heads up and I only had AK vs. Joe's Q6 so since I did not have a made hand, I don't know if this would qualify as being joed. But since the Q6 would qualify as "sneaky cards" I guess I was joed!
Chel, since I am finding it difficult to shake the memory of my being joed, you can add me to the waiting list for your "I've been joed" support group services. We should schedule the support group for Friday so that the new "I've been joed" casualties could share their experiences from the prior night.
Good point Slack! Line forms to the left people...no shoving and lets keep the "i got joed worse than you" stories to a low roar! The police are tired of coming out to break up the brawls! ;)
O.K., I've started an "I've been joed" support group in the discussion forum. Includes Curt's definition and some links to classic "I've been joed" hands.

David: if there was a 6 on the river and no hits for you then you were joed in its purest form. I've been joed by copycats, which adds an additional layer to the post-joed concussion bc you 've no idea where it's coming from next. I've also seen many good friends get joed. Perhaps we also need a support group for the friends and family members of those who got joed, and the witnesses of severe joeings (2, 3 against pocket AAs with a 3 on te turn and another on the river, for example). We could
Invite the direct survivors too and meet after every tourney and proceed into the post-tourney cash game. No, wait, we already do.
If Eric doesn't mind we could use his room as a post tourney prayer room or confession booth for use by our on staff counselors and the joed victims.
I remember a hand when Tony went all in pre-flop with 83 against three or more players and hit a full house. I think that hand would qualify as a joe hand.
I think that I will work with Will to find a property where we can open a rehabilitation center for the survivors. We can start with Chel and Aelred as the consulting doctors and perhaps John and I can be the house parents, since we've shared the recovery experience of having been joed and lived to tell about it. I do think it will be important to include a wing for those who have suffered from Slack Attacks as well. No one should be left in the big blind...er, I mean, behind.
One distinction between being joed or Slack’ed would be the quality of the hand that wins. A typical Joe hand employs the use of odd “sneaky” or highly unconnected cards, whereas a Slack Attack usually comes out of nowhere and is quite vicious and unnerving. A typical “Slack attack” type hand is usually solid with less reliance on the “luck” factor.
I was once joed by Cindy. I had AA against Cindy’s 25 that hit a straight on the flop. Flop comes down 346. Shazizaly Bam! Then, later, I was “Slacked” by Cindy when my three of a kind ran up against Cindy’s Broadway Straight that also hit on the flop.
I need a private room at the facility as Ive been joed and slacked in the same tourney then in cash. Still traumatized.
I will have to excuse myself from counseling Jennifer, as I am too close to the situation to assist.
hello my name is Chontel. Well yes, I too have been joe'd. A A against 10 3 off. Flop 10 10 3. And I raised. If you look closely, you can still see the black eye from that one.
What can one say, when you go from a noun to a verb and a three letter word to a four? WOW! My kindest regard and special thanks to everyone, who have made this an endearment.
Three cheers for Joe!
Remember, Joe. When your first book "What would Joe do?" comes out, I want a signed copy.
Yeah Joe when you blow up..remember the little people who knew you when you where the "Original Joe"
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
