THE WORLD'S FAIR

The NYC Park Rangers will be hosting a walk through the former 1939 and 1964 site of the World's Fair, now known to us as Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

This event is OUTDOORS.

Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Wear proper footwear for walking/hiking. Bring drinks and snacks.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Without inclement weather, there should be natural lighting. Bring equipment and cases suitable for outdoor walking activity. It is recommended that you weatherproof your gear.

This event is NOT recommended if you will have difficulty with the light to moderate walking activity.

AFTERWARDS: Time pending, we will stroll through the Queens Museum of Art for leisure, restrooms and purchasable refreshments.

The museum has a suggested admission fee of $8.00 - Admission is FREE.

RESTROOMS are available before the walk at the Queens Museum of Art, which is within walking distance of the Unisphere.

DIRECTIONS:

Public Transportation: Take the 7 train to Mets/Willets Point Station and look for the Unisphere - walk towards the Unisphere (10-15 minute walk). Please check the MTA website for schedules, service changes and updates.  http://www.mta.info

Driving Directions: Eastbound/Westbound - Take Grand Central Parkway exit 9p, look for museum signs and park by museum.    http://maps.google.com

Very, very awesome and an absolutely great idea since many people go there and don't take in these things or have knowledge of them.

thanks tess and the urban park rangers for a great day and a great tour. ranger gabriela was a really awesome guide!! flushing meadows corona park is my favorite park in nyc because of the unisphere and rocket thrower, as well as it's association with the two world's fairs and the insane diversity in the borough of Queens. i knew a lot about the park before this tour, but now even more after. it was great to see a lot of familiar faces from the meetup world, and met some wonderful new people. great group today!!!

    Hi Guys,
I gave it the college try, I really did. With the way the trains are running from the city, I had to turn back, would never have made it.

wayne, the unisphere is the big metal sculpture of the earth in the park as depicted in the picture at the top of this meetup (without the water at this time of year). you can't miss it. it is close to "universe ct" as thea pointed out. it's right near the queens museum of art. but if you google "unisphere, flushing, ny", you'll get an exact result in google maps off to the right side.

The number 7 train is not running, and the LIRR does not stop at Willits Pt station on Saturday. Driving only alternative

    March 2, 2013

    • Jesse A.

Seems you can take the E F M or R train to Roosevelt Ave and than transfer to the 7

      March 2, 2013

  • James M. T.

No #7 trains between Queensboro Plaza and Times Sq-42 St
for the weekend due to construction.

For people coming from Mahattan take N or Q and Stop @ Queensboro then transfer #7 to go Flushing and get off @ Willet's Point (last stop before Main street).

      Works for me... thanks!

      March 2, 2013

A heads up about the 7 train: It is under construction this weekend, and so does not go directly from Manhattan to Queens... there is a system of shuttle buses, but it's a pain. I heard rumor that the best way to get to The Worlds Fair is to take the LIRR to Willet's Point. A bit more costly, but much less hassle.

Wanting to make sure that everyone can make it without a hitch :)

fyi- the LIRR only stops at Willet's Point when there is a game going on. Unfortunately there won't be tomorrow. I checked.

The rangers are aware that we have a large number of people attending, so we might be broken up in different groups, led by different rangers.

At the Fort Totten tour last year, the rangers were forewarned of the large number of folks that RSVP'd. They broke the crowd up into groups and ran multiple tours, back to back.

Flushing Meadow Park is where we practice in the spring for summer dragon boat race, on the first week of August. There will be more than 120 dragon teams (Chase, Coke, Citi Bank, ConEd...) and some 80 international ethnic food fair vendors. Perhaps, we can do this event again in mid-summer, 2013.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
