Walk from the George Washington Bridge and Hike the Palisades

  • Palisades Interstate Park

Henry Hudson Dr, Fort Lee, NJ (map)

  • I'm not sure if it's already been done, but if not, it would be great discover the bi-state area. Here's more information. Apparently, one can walk from the George Washington Bridge, turn left, and commence the hike along the Palisades.

    Hello everyone,

As I mentioned in a previous comment, I wasn't sure if I would be available to host this event on the date that was chosen. It turns out that unfortunately, I won't be able to on August 10.

I will set up another date in the future. And for all of you who RSVPed--I hope the event's cancellation does not throw off your calendar.

Please stay tuned, and if you have suggestions for another date that's not August 10 or August 17, feel free to post it in the comments here.

Where is going to be the meeting point, George Washington Bridge New York City Side or New Jersey Side??? Usually, when I go to hike the Palisade State Park with any one, the meeting point is W178th St & Cabrini Blvd, New York city, facing Jersey on the left side GWB...

How long are we going to be walking? Need to know this so I can plan my return to LI

  • Paulette

Is this an actual hike as in "hiking boots are mandatory" or a leisurely albeit somewhat longer-than-usual walk?

coming from Manhattan you turn RIGHT to get to the Long Path - be advised that a section of the Shore trail (down by the river) is closed due to a landslide - this

to finish - this closed section is just south of State Line Lookout and includes ' The Giant Stairs' you must study the map of the hiking trails in the park to see where to descent safely to the river SOUTH of the Giant Stairs.

Actually.. you turn Left, go down the pathway.. and enter Palisades park from there. It's 12-miles thru the park and there are various trails along the river, and above the road-way.

Funny that you posted this. This is something I've been planning to add and Tess & I talked about it recently, but we don't have free time for an event date yet.

If you hike from start-finish thru Palisades Park, it's 12-13 miles. So, about 25 miles round-trip.

Here's some additional info and maps:
    http://www.nynjtc.org/park/palisades-interstate-park-nj
    http://www.njpalisades.org/maps.html

I've cycled thru the park dozens of times over the years, but I've never actually hiked it. That's a goal for this year, for sure.

Great suggestion.. and curious timing :-)

Hi Steve, thanks for attaching further information. It's good to know that one is supposed to turn left, rather than right :) A 25 mile trek doesn't sound bad, especially if there's beautiful scenery along the way. Hopefully there are people that want to do this.

Neha.. as you posted the event, I've made you the Event Host for the hike. You have basic management over the event tools.

Definitely would be a great hike. Unfortunately, I'm out of town that weekend.

    Have fun, everyone!

Hi Steve, thanks! Was caught by a bit of a surprise. Everything was quiet w/r/t my suggestion, and then, all of the sudden, there's a date and time, and now I'm the Event Host! :)

It went live after 3 people signed up. Sorry I'll miss this. Enjoy :-)

Hi everyone, sorry for the delayed response!

Nazmul, thanks for picking that date...but I'm not sure if I myself can make it that weekend. Also, someone else suggested doing it a bit later than that so that the weather is more amenable for those who don't do too well with torrid temperatures. What does everyone else think?

Steve are you Hosting this Event?

    July 9, 2013

    • Steve H

I didn't realize someone had set a date. I was thinking about Aug/Sep after it cooled down a bit, but I'll be out of town the weekend of the 10th.

you can also take a bus from P. Auth. or GW Bridge Terminal - get off at Closter Dock Rd. and walk back to Manhattan - appx 9 miles.
You will be walking along the Long Path (blazes blue).
Go here http://www.njpalisades.org/maps.html to download and print a free map of the path.

I'd love to go but definitely couldn't make it at 10 on a Sunday Summer morning.

    July 8, 2013

  • Paulette

Yes, depending on the day (I strongly prefer weekends), time, weather and distance of this hike (see my comment). I love to walk, but if this is 10 or 20 miles, I may have to give it further thought.

    July 8, 2013

  • Paulette

Sounds good to me as long as there's a walkway (I don't do pitons)! But I'm curious, how far are we hiking - and does anyone know if there's a bus or train back in case one way is enough?

I have been wanting to do this as well... I just dont have the details on the event yet... :-)

    May 29, 2013

    • Steve H

Details? Who needs details? It's simple, Len! Walk across GWB.. walk a few hundred yards down the hill (to the Left).. enter the park.. walk. Keep walking. Walk a LOT!

Get to the end of the park @ the police station and turn around. Then walk more. Much more.

I'm looking for a free date. Right now -my- only free June weekends are 16 & 30 (Sundays). I think a July Saturday would be better. This would be a serious All Day hike.

It's also very much not a beginner walk/hike in the park.
