Bear Mountain State Park Hike & Oktoberfest!

  • Sep 28, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join us for an extended day-trip to Bear Mountain, to enjoy miles of hiking, an overload of nature, fantastic photography opportunities, a trip to the zoo (beware the turkey buzzards!), relics of a haunted abandoned ghost town and.. Oktoberfest!

We'll take the Metro North and/or arrange carpooling with members who want to use that option.

More details to follow.. stay tuned.

This place has the most amazing views the Hudson river while hiking.
It is accessible via metro north. http://nysparks.com/parks/13

We will be hiking from the Bear Mountain Inn to the top of the mountain at the Perkins Memorial Observatory. There is a 360-degree scenic view, and the observatory itself has photos and history of the area. This is our hike route: http://goo.gl/maps/0u9n2

IMPORTANT: This is NOT a walk in the park! WEAR STURDY HIKING SHOES OR BOOTS! Some of this will be on paved or gravel trail, but we WILL be climbing over trees, rocks and boulders. You NEED ankle support! This is a HIKE. Ensure you're ready for it.

The distance is just under 4 miles. You will be ascending 1100+ Feet to the peak.
Starting Elevation:[masked] ft | Peak Elevation:[masked] ft | You can see more details, and export the hike to your GPS from this link: http://www.mapmyhike.com/routes/view/292326909

After we reach the peak, on the way down we'll hit the Bear Mountain Zoo for a bit.. And then.. on to Oktoberfest! There are dozens of vendors in addition to plenty of beer, brats and oompah music!

We will be DEPARTING Grand Central on the 09:43am train. Please arrive at Grand Central at 9:00am (or sooner) to ensure you have time to get your tickets.

We will be DEPARTING Bear Mountain starting at 5:30pm. There are trains from Peekskill at 6:35, 7:39, 8:35 and 9:35pm (final train).

We will be taking taxis from/to the Peekskill station to/from Bear Mountain Inn. It is approx 6-7 miles drive.

Taxi contact info is below. I am contacting taxi services to arrange for cars to pick us up. Obviously, it will take several cars and several trips to transport everyone. Your patience is appreciated. I recommend you save the taxi and train information below, for your own reference.

DRIVERS/CARPOOL/OTHER folks: Please time your trips to meet us at the PEEEKSKILL Train Station by 10:45am. It should take 45-60 minutes to get everyone from Peekskill to the Inn via cars. I'm anticipating we can get going on the hike, around 12:00pm.

EVERYONE: Please bring small bills so you can easily split cab fare.

Steve, you did a great job organizing the hike. I wan to personally thank so many women who helped me through on our way up the mountain. Some waited for me since I was the straggler and some helped me by carrying my camera and sweater. I will always be grateful to you for all the assistance and encouragement you gave me. Steve and a young lady gave me their hand when the boulders were too massive for me to climb. Thank you for everything. i really enjoyed meeting the people, and you were all very kind. I can now say, "I climbed Bear Mountain and returned". Thank you for making this a journey that I will never forget. I'll be adding pictures to the site.

Aurelia.. I'm glad you fought it to the top. I know it was a challenge, but now you've earned your bragging rights! Thanks for sending me the pics. I'll post them soon.

  • Rhonda

Steve, thanks for organising & getting people together who like to hike/climb mountains.
This was a great day trip/hike. Altho we got lost on route, missed Steve's group,Nuka,Lori & I (Rhonda ) climbed Bear Mountain toTop,took the more difficult Welchtrail up.(by mistake) Very steep up & very rocky.
great thrill to achieve & keep on going to top of MT to Perkins Memorial, 360 deg views around, river & Nyc high rise bldgs in far distance,
We came down the Appalacian trail- much easier route-well marked a lot of steps flatter trail. Bear Mt is a great place to hike, even for those who cann't climb, the walk around the lake is pretty. By mid October with change of colors, foliage will look stunning.
Afterwards we drove up to Perkins Memorial -watched sunset.
Nuka , Lori and I kept together & encouraged each other to keep on going to the top-
took our time along the way to enjoy the views.
Fabulous Hike for Mind, Body & Spirit.
Thanks Nuka and Lori for your comapny.

Rhonda, I'm sorry we missed you. It's hard to coordinate once your late.. But.. You DID take the exact same route we took. That was my planned route. A butt kicking Real Hike! As challenging as the Major Welsh was, I preferred it to all those hundreds of steps on the Appalachian trail. Knee killers. Glad you all made it to the top!

Chris, i want to thank you and all the organizers for a truly great experience. This is one for the history books.
Beside the small snake that i saw, that scare the wits out of me on the trail, i was a friendly group of people.
Thanks again for the experience. I will post my pictures shortly.

Steve, me and Peter are still waiting for Jane. She accused me of not having confirmed the ride with her, although I can prove I did it. Anyway around 10:10 we have talked on the phone and she said she would be on her way to pick us up. An hour later she still didn't show up and didn't call us to update us about her coming. This is not fun at all. At this point we think the driveno show. She let us down. I attend hiking trips almost very weekend and have never experienced this.

To All who reserved a ride with me! Based on the Steve's e-mail we don't need to be at the destination until noon (correct if I am mistaken). I'll be at the corner 96th St & West End Ave. at 10:15am Please text me with your comments.

    September 26, 2013

    • Steve H

Plan to be at the lodge no later than 11:30. I prefer drivers meet us at the train station @ 10:45 and help shuttle people. As soon as we have everyone from the train station to the lodge, we're moving out. If that happens before noon, that's when we move. I can only guess at how long it will take to cab/drive everyone. Plan earlier, not later.

Hi All, I am late to the conversation threads, because I was on the waiting list. I have been confirmed and so I a catching up with the discussion. I +1 will be meeting up with the group at Grand Central @ 9.00 am. I guess I will have to take the organized transportation to Bear Mountain Park. I am in the Bronx, off Fordham Road, so it is too late to get a carpool with anyone.

    September 24, 2013

With 80 RSVPs I only have 32 poll responses | 16 Metro North, 4 Drivers, 7 Passengers, 5 Other (boat, bus or whatever you chose). - I really need to know how many are taking Metro North, so I can better inform the cab companies. Thanks.

    - Carpoolers.. please keep in touch with each other to coordinate. Let's not have anyone miss their rides. Especially returning to NYC!

    September 18, 2013

    • Tara

I have +2 in my RSVP, but I'm certain that the poll only accounted for one vote, even though all three of us will be traveling by MNR. I assume other people probably had a similar problem.

      September 23, 2013

    • Steve H

The polls function can be useful, but limited. I can't adjust that. As long as I have a rough idea of train riders, and thus cab riders, it's OK.

      September 21, 2013

  • Steve H

Those of you who will be doing the hike, BRING PLENTY OF WATER and strongly recommend you bring snacks and/or fruit to munch along the way, to keep up energy. Again, you'll be climbing 1000+ feet elevation.

    September 19, 2013

  • Sharon

Hi Steve, do we need to bring lunch? What time do you expect to arrive at Oktoberfest? Thanks!

    September 18, 2013

    • Steve H

Bring plenty of water for the trail, and I recommend at least bringing snacks to eat along the way to keep up energy. The hike will take about 3 hours, depending how many actually do the hike. I want to hit O'fest by 3:30 at the latest. That'll give us about 2 hours before we start heading back.
