Bear Mountain 2X Hike & Oktoberfest

This will be an ALL DAY TRAVEL & HIKE trip.

We're going to double down on the hiking for this one. But for safety, I am limiting the attendance to 20.

We will hike Anthony's Nose and then Perkins Tower. We'll do about 7-8 miles of DIFFICULT trails. Possibly up to 10 miles. We'll see. If we extend the hike to include Doodletown, I think we'll hit 10 miles.

IMPORTANT: This is NOT a walk in the park! WEAR STURDY HIKING SHOES OR BOOTS! Some of this will be on paved or gravel trail, but we WILL be climbing over trees, rocks and boulders. You NEED ankle support! This is a HIKE. Ensure you're ready for it

You'll need to be in EXCELLENT fitness and conditioning for this. There will be a LOT of rock scrambling and going nearly vertical. At least a mile worth of climbing is over mammoth boulders you'll be on all 4s to traverse.

I strongly suggest you wear hiking shoes/boots with a gripping sole.

If you want to see some of the terrain, check our our Bear Mtn hike on Sat 9/28.

Emphasis is on the hiking this time. Oktoberfest will be a nice after workout stop. It can be fun, but it will be PACKED and INSANE with lines. We'll give it a shot, but another option is to hit the Peekskill Brewery which is just 2 blocks from the train station.

They have a dozen of their beers on tap + a cask. Check their beer menu: http://peekskillbrewery.wordpress.com/beer-3/house-beers/ I suggest getting a flite and trying several! The food is very good too.

----------Travel Info----------

Sunrise: Oct 13, 2013 @ 7:05 AM

We will be DEPARTING Grand Central on the 09:43am train. Please arrive at Grand Central at 9:00am (or sooner) to ensure you have time to get your tickets.

We will be DEPARTING Bear Mountain starting at 6:00pm. There are trains from Peekskill at 6:35, 7:39, 8:35 and 9:35pm. With a smaller group, we have more freedom to play it by ear.

Sunset: Oct 13, 2013 @ 6:18 PM

------------------------------

EVERYONE: Please bring small bills so you can easily split cab fare.

CENTRAL MEETING POINT @ BEAR MOUNTAIN: The front of the Inn, facing the flagpole and cannons. Look for me in a yellow bandanna.

------------------------------

We'll be on the Major Welch Trail, the Appalachian Trail and the S-BM Trail. We may be going OFF-trail to get on the Doodletown loop trail.

R U Ready?

------------------------------

Hike Routes:
Hike 1 - Lodge to Perkins Observatory Tower
http://www.mapmyhike.com/routes/view/306006255

Hike 2 - Lodge to Anthony's Nose (thru the Zoo)
http://www.mapmyhike.com/routes/view/306011861

There is no documented trail to use for the mapping app to Anthony's Nose, but there is a trail.. of sorts.  It will be a lot of vertical walking and climbing.

Depending on how our time constraints are (ie: sunset @ 6:18pm) we may or may not actually walk all around the lake on the 2nd hike. That'll cut distance and save time. On Hike 2 we'll just turn around and come back the way we came.

If all goes well, we will hit 8-10 miles.

Holy freak me out! Guys.. I think I captured a ghost!?!?!! Take a look at the pics at the June family burial plot. Remember when I was taunting the ghosts to come out? Holy Frak.. WTH is that/those glowing streaks by the headstone? It's the only pic with some kind of anomaly that wasn't visible to the eye. I'm freaked out!

Quick weather update. We're still looking good on Sunday! It will rain @ Peekskill on Fri & Saturday, but that will burn out before Sunday morning. However, be ready for wet, muddy or slick conditions on the hike. I trust that will not scare anyone away :-)

Official Sunday forcast: Clear. High of 66F. Winds from the ENE at 5 to 10 mph. 0% Chance of Precipitation.

We are taking the train. NO DRIVERS. Too much unreliable coordination. Be at Grand Central @ 9am. Expect an ASS KICKING hike. Expect DIFFICULT terrain. Accept the risk of injury. Expect me to kick you off the hike if you don't adhere to my directions. And then? Expect to have fun! (but be very sore the next day)

Maybe it was your infectious smile.. Or angry bear pose.. That worked in your favor? Did you bring your ball? ;-)

      October 1, 2013

    • Tara

Ah, hahah. I mean it was $10 per person always and forever. And no! No ball this time! I'm sure I'll find another on the trails soon enough, lol.

    • Steve H

Angela.. fair warning. If you or anyone else takes a car instead of the train, and you're not there on time, we're not waiting. I'm hitting the trails as soon as we're off the train and the cabs drop us off at the lodge.
