59th Street Bridge/Central Park Walk + Museum of Natural History

Join Friends from BaysideHiking & Nature MeetupHiking and Outdoor Adventure5 BORO ExplorationAlternative to the Bar SceneGateway to AdventureNYC Chill Hiking, Camping and Outdoor Activity Meetup and the Astoria Newbies as we walk from Long Island City, across the 59th Street Bridge and through Central Park a little before ending at The Museum of Natural History.

See this link for the route: http://goo.gl/maps/EyxJq

• We will meet on the corner of Crescent Street and Queens Plaza North at 11am as seen via this link: http://goo.gl/maps/toZLg

• We depart at exactly 11:20am so don't be late.

As you can see from the link above, the closest subway stops are the 7, N, Q to Queensboro Plaza and the E, M, R to Queens Plaza. It's a short walk to the meetup location from either of those stops.

If you plan to drive and you need an address for your GPS you can use this: 25-11 Queens Plaza North, Long Island City, NY 11103 - I do not know about parking in the area.

Distance: 3.7 miles

Duration: 1.5 hours for the walking part

Pace: Moderate

Once we get to the museum, people can choose to go inside or not. I will personally be checking out the Space Show: Dark Universe located in the planetarium. Afterwards I may or may not go into the museum.

If you've never been to a meetup, don't worry, there are always new people, so don't be too nervous. The event host is very nice and friendly. You can come alone or bring a friend or two or three. Upon your arrival I'll greet you and introduce you to some people. It's really quite painless.

If you have any questions prior to or on the day of the event, please do not hesitate to give me (Beau) a call at [masked]

Rain: no go. Snow is a go. =)

When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But while walking and talking among the people of my group and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter. So yeah, it was a good time. =)

Huh weird. Well sorry. I don't think we meant to. Last place we remember seeing you was CVS and we looked and re-looked. Maybe I have you confused with someone else. We went back to the museum too quite drunk. We all bought pints of hard liquor. Well we had one heck of a great time! It was a pleasure meeting you.

This walk was great. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful snow covered scenery, wonderful people to chat with which made me forget how I cold it was out there not to mention our organizer, Beau, who made it fun as usual. Natural History Museum stop was a splendid idea. I enjoyed the space show.

JohnO will you kindly advise Paul about the Manhattan-side best meeting location please. Thanks.

About 80 people have asked me if this walk is still on if it snows. This walk is a GO if it snows. Please refer to the last line in the event description, and please, with a cherry on top read my event descriptions from now on b/c every last possible detail is always included. Thank you. Close to 200 people have RSVP'd across 11 meetup groups. I expect that number to drop by 70%, but that's normal, even on beautiful days. Please check the weather and dress accordingly. I was hoping for snow. I can't wait!

  • Betty

Please advise if you plan on canceling if it snows? Or do you still walk.

It says so in the event description. See last line.

Do we all walk back to Queens Plaza together or are we on our own after the museum?

    December 8, 2013

    • Beau

      On your own

      December 8, 2013

Looking forward to this! Beau, I might join you for the Space Show. I still have unused tix from when I became a museum member. :-)

In case anyone is unaware of this, there is a suggested admission cost into the museum, but if you don't want to pay the suggested price you can pay anything you want. Even $0.01 (seriously) http://www.amnh.org/plan-your-visit/admissions-ticketing

Looks like a fun walk, I regularly walk over the 59th St bridge. As an FYI, parking is mostly meters with the long term spaces on Skillman Ave., about 1/4 mile south of the Meetup location.

    December 2, 2013

    • JohnO

One bit of advice, the walk way is about six feet wide with bikes and walkers going in both directions, and it gets pretty busy during the day. It's important walkers stay to the right and for the most part walk in single file. The elevation going toward Manhattan is moderate but long, at least a half mile.

      December 2, 2013

    • Beau

Cool thanks for the info. I will be sure and inform everyone on proper walking etiquette on the day of the walk.

      December 2, 2013

Great route! Look forward to meeting everyone.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
