HARD CORE EXPLORE: Pelham, Hunter, City Island (Rescheduled)

6 to Pelham Bay Park stop. We meet & walk from there.

This is a Hard Core Exploration outing.

You should ONLY RSVP if you're willing to Get Lost, Take Notes, Have NO Plan, NO Clue, NO need to get home early, NO KIDDING!

I will be in Military Mode on the HCE events. I lead, You follow.

No Moaning. No Groaning. Period.

I'm starting a "Hard Core Explore" series of events so the serious die hards among us can work together to discover and plan new explorations. That means.. You have to come into these events totally blind and open to whatever we discover. The purpose here is to find out anything and everything worth turning into a main event.

We might discover something awesome.
We might end up wasting our time.

I know a *little* about Pelham and I've been on City Island a few times. On this trip, I want to explore more and learn what will.. And will not.. Work with future events. I'll create a VERY Loose route map plan, but expect to walk your ass off.. All Damn Day and Evening!

I'm looking for people with experience or history in their regions. Let's explore and learn together. We'll create better and more interesting future events together. If I question your ability to handle this, I will remove you from the event.

The walk is ON! Yes, we'll get rain overnight and EARLY Saturday morning.. but by 10am it will have stopped, and by noon, we'll have SUN :-D

IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT, UPDATE YOUR RSVP IMMEDIATELY! We have a large waiting list, and I'm sure someone will appreciate the opportunity if you cannot make it.

IF YOU ARE ON THE WAITING LIST, be sure to double-check the RSVPs in case you get bumped up to a YES spot.

Remember folks.. this is a NATURE walk. I recommend that you WEAR BOOTS! Preferably waterproof/resistant. Or high-top hiking shoes would be good. We will be On and OFF trails, along the shore, and probably getting muddy.

The distance will be 12-15 miles, depending where we can actually go. Here is the route we will be taking.

Check out this map on MapMyFitness: 14.59 mi Pelham, Hunter, City Island
Distance: 14.59 mi @ http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/390271690
Full Screen @ http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/fullscreen/390271690/

We'll walk to the end of City Island, as there are various places along the way to get food and drink. Specifically, I plan to hit Johnny's Reef at the very end of the island. It's got a little of everything, it has outdoor picnic seating, and it's got decent food. Very no-frills uber casual CASH ONLY munchy spot for weary walkers (and a favorite cycling spot when we do this ride).

After we leave City Island, we'll walk over to Hunter and Twin islands, then to Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum (open 12pm-4pm), and then we'll TRY to see where/how-far we can go over on the wildlife preserve. I'm thinking we'll be able to walk along the edge area for a bit, but we won't be intruding over onto the grounds.

Then we're walking back to the 6 train. Sunset is 7:30pm. We'll be out ALL day.. but not past sunset. I'm going to guess around the 8 hour mark. We'll try to wind down and be back at the train station by 6pm.

BRING CAMERAS.. Bring backpack, snacks, fluids, first-aid kit, clean socks & underwear (what? you never know!), etc.. BRING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!

Now let's go have fun :-D

This is located in Pelham Bay Park.

Nancy, regrettably we did not make it to the mansion. We used too much time and distance on the islands, and by the 14th mile.. We were fairly wiped out. Thanks for hanging tough with us till Orchard Beach! Hope that injury heals soon and we'll see you at the next one!

Heads up for the 6 train tomorrow >>

Pelham Bay Park-bound trains skip 51, 68, 77, 96, 103, 110 and 116 Sts If you plan to get on at one of those stations, you'll need to take a southbound train to the stop before one of the listed stops, then switch to the Bronx 6.

If you take the 4 or 5, you need to switch to the 6 at 125th.

    Hey Steve,
I love the description of this event. you are funny, witty and tough. :)
I will try to join the next one.

  • Bea

Love the idea. I wish there were more spots.

    1 · March 18, 2014

    • Steve H

Bea, no worries. The idea is to take random ideas and a small, adventurous crew, to see what parts, if any, are worth bigger and better Inclusive Meetups.

I'll use the best parts of these adventures to plan better Meetups for the group at large. Hopefully.. More Fun, Less foibles :-)

Thank Steve. I actually like to go with smaller groups.

Guys, someone else should go in my place. I work for a startup and they have asked me to do some work tomorrow last minute. I am sorry for the last minute notice as well. I hope someone else goes in my place and really gets to enjoy this cool idea.

BLERG! The weather is taking a turn for the wet. It's a crap-shoot between "chance of rain", rain & "possible t-storm".
I hate crap-shoots! OK, I want Hard Core, but not cold, wet & miserable. The ultimate goal is still to have fun and explore potential new Meetup plans for the Whole group. Can't do that if we're all wet. I'm going to reschedule this.

      Formula for Google's search algorithm?

      1 · March 26, 2014

    • Steve H

Yes & yes. Meetup masks digits it considers ph#s in the event write-ups, but not the notes (I think). I also do this to throw off search bots. It's not perfect, but it stops my ph# from being recognized as such. Humans figure it out. Crude bots don't.

Glenn, great to see you help run a Meetup also. Glad you like my idea. Let's plan a collaboration event.

The days are nearing! Everyone.. Thanks for your (admittedly unexpected) enthusiasm for these events. There's a reason for my Hardcore assitude. I'm looking to totally try out random.. I mean RANDOM Exploration events! Just like I stated. The purpose of limited 10 person groups is to weed out the flakes. There's no other way to say it. On these events I want, expect, demand Perfect Attendance. Period. If you cannot make it for any reason, bow out. Or I will *suspend* you for a month. We will be a small tight group of explorers checking out Everything on a whim. Again.. EVERYTHING. Don't worry.. If you don't make the cut on this meet, the purpose is to explore and create NEW Meetup potential! Meetups created from the HCE Will be some of our best. Or at least.. Some of your most memorable ;-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
