Explore two of NYC's beaches by bicycle

Ben & I rode our bikes to Rockaway Beach one afternoon & decided at the last minute to ride to Coney Island (via the Marine Pkwy Bridge) for a Nathan's hotdog. It was a pretty awesome ride, so I'd thought I'd do it again, but this time with a group.

We will all meet up in **Queens (take the R train to Woodhaven Blvd and ride 2 miles south to Metro Ave or J train to Woodhaven Blvd. You can either ride North to Metro or wait there since we are riding past there anyway. Just call once you get there so I know to expect you) and head south on Woodhaven Blvd (which becomes Crossbay Blvd). NOTE: This isn't the safest route, it's direct. Crossbay Blvd is a busy street. Once we get to the bridge, there is a bike lane in the street & a protected bike path along the sidewalk. We can make a quick stop at Bay Gulls if anyone wants and continue our merry way over the Crossbay Bridge via the Ped Path. From there, we can ride to the beach and hang out on the boardwalk or continue our journey to Coney Island.

**Side note: If it is convenient to meet us en route, then please call/text me before hand so I know to look at for you. The original meetup location is more for my convenience since I live 3 miles from there.**

Once in Coney Island we will stop for Nathans if you choose, and if they are open, Coney Island Brewery (a VERY small place but fun nonetheless).

Stuff you need to know:

  • This is a ROAD ride,  so a road bike or hybrid is best. Mountain bikes will not work very well on this ride.
  • From start to finish is approximately 30 miles. We will be riding at a comfortable pace (12-14mph) and obeying the traffic laws.
  • Rainy weather cancels.
  • Helmets are MANDATORY. No helmet, no ride.
  • Bring spare tube, patch kit, pump, CO2 cartridges, etc.
  • Money & metrocard (some may want to take the train back from Coney Island)
  • Water and snack
  • A good attitude. I mean seriously, what a great way to spend a Saturday!

My gears and chain were all gunked up from the sand trap. I cleaned it off with disk brake cleaner you get from Autozone. It looks spanking new. FYI for you DIYs.

Holly, Ben, & Steve...awesome riding with all of you. I had a great time. The few of us riding was much better. I got to know each of you more. A bigger group often fragment in two clicks. Well, can't wait for Ben to organize a mt bike run! I'm long overdue on my mt bike.

Oh, FYI...My home remedy from removing chain grease from your skin....baking soda on top of wet nap or damp paper towel. It takes the grease right off without any harnful agent.

Is it really only 12-15 from your place to the start of the ride? Okay..I am no longer impressed. :) Yes, round trip is about 30 miles.

Also I have to ride across the water. You should be impressed!

For those who aren't sure if they want to commit to riding 30 miles, you can ride to Coney Island (approximately 15 miles) and take the train from there. The entire ride ROUND TRIP is 30 miles. I should have specified that. Sorry.

I haven't ridden in months, but i have been working out. I guess I'll find out if it's enough tomorrow.

You'll be fine. It's not a race but a leisurely bike ride. :) It's going to be a great day!

Been out of town all week and haven't been training. Don't want to slow the group down. I am more a 10mph rider.

Gina, we will try to organize another ride like this in late summer.

Been struggling with a cold all week so don't think I should commit to this now, sorry.

    Only roadbikes??

    May 2, 2013

    • Holly R.

Michelle: Road bike or hybrid. Mountain Bikes or heavy cruisers might not work well for this ride. It's not very hilly, but it's not completely flat.

Woohoo!! This ride is next week. Please change your RSVP if you are unable to attend so we know who to look out for. (Even if you decide you don't want to do this the morning of.) I will send an email out with my # the night before.

I already live a few miles away from Coney Island. I'm open for any beach sports though.

The one on the Boardwalk is open; though not the original site on the corner of the avenue. If nothing else, there are plenty of little stands open. I just walked the beach last week. Very pretty.

Someone sent a message that Nathans has not been opened since Sandy. I completely forgot about that. :( The ride will still go on and maybe we can stop somewhere in the Coney Island area for lunch to show some support to the community.
