5th Garry Oak Scout Group
We have been in Oak Bay for over 100 years, and operating as 5th Garry Oak since 1959.
5th Garry Oak has programs for Beavers (5-7 year olds), Cubs (8-10 year olds), Scouts (11-14 year olds) and Venturers (14-17 year olds). Our programs are based upon Scouts Canada’s principles of Duty to God, Duty to Others, and Duty to Self and are driven by youth who are regularly consulted and utilized in program planning and delivery. Youth learn by doing, and all members commit to “do your best”, contributing to the community, and respecting and caring for others. All section leaders are volunteers and commit to Scouts Canada principles and Scouts Canada’s “Duty of Care” code of conduct.
Our youth benefit from informal education through various outings, meetings, activities, and badge work designed to foster understanding, confidence, personal health and wellness, environmental awareness, self-reliance, spirituality and a sense of accomplishment. Our community service and environment projects enrich not only the lives of those directly affected in the community, but also our members who participate. Such projects foster concern for others, develop knowledge and skill relating to the world and an understanding of global issues and provide our members with the opportunity to work with others in the community. Our environmental activities improve and beautify the parks we work on and we ensure all our outdoor activities have a positive effect on the environment by educating our members about “no trace” camping practices.
5th Garry oak is a co-ed group with members of all ages, some with disabilities, who come from various religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We celebrate these differences and use them as opportunities to educate members about different cultures and religions. We welcome all applicants and follow a practice of “no one left behind”. If parents cannot afford our program we will fund their registration fees.
We have many parent helpers and adult volunteers who volunteer their time, energy and “know-how” to help plan and carry out challenging programs for youth. Our programs ensure long-term community benefit by helping develop well-rounded citizens with positive attitudes who understand the importance of their participation in helping others. Scouting principles of “Help take care of the world”, “Sharing, sharing, sharing”, “Do your best!” and “Do a good turn daily” serve youth well in all facets of life.
We are a parent-sponsored Scout group with many devoted adults who volunteer their time, energy and resources to maintain our building and equipment, look after our finances, do fundraising and ensure our programs meet or exceed Scouts Canada’s program standards thereby ensuring our continued success and sustainability as a Scout Group.
