I really enjoyed the evening. Thank you Marilyn for tireless efforts creating & coordinating this event. Your home is warm & inviting; the table you prepared was lovely. I've no doubt that the interesting conversations and effortless interactions amongst the group were a result of the comfortable atmosphere you created and your affability as a hostess.
    Thank you again!

Thanks, Marie.....it was yummy! See you at bowling in February.
I have out of town company in Jan so can't make that one....

Hi Kathy - yes the potato peeler will work just fine as the slices come out more ribbon-like which cooks a bit quicker. Also as it cooks at the end, go to Simmer and stir for 5 minutes (10 min or less if pieces are thicker). Enjoy!

Thank you, Marie......I don't have a mandolin......is it easy with
a potato peeler? Your dish was delish!

Everyone had a wonderful time. We got to know each other better and there was a lot of laughing. Dinner was very good and the white elephant exchange was a lot of fun. Everyone left looking forward to the next event.

I just wrote a comment on our lovely evening, but I think it is lost somewhere (see "conversations"?) in which I thanked Marie for the recipe, saying I enjoyed meeting her. And also I thanked Marilyn for providing her home and being such a generous host. To sum it up (in case you don't seek out the original comment) I said it was good meeting and re-meeting you all (Too bad using the computer is not one of my strong points!) Good picture, Marilyn; I see you decided to post one.

Very pleasant, a lovely holiday event. New acquaintances opening up and warming to each other. Fun, food, and laughter--all good stuff. Thank you, Marie, for the recipe--I enjoyed meeting you. Thanks also to Marilyn, a kind, generous hostess for providing her home where we gathered.

    Very enjoyable evening. Good company!

(For our meal, I had doubled the recipe below:)
    SWEET/SOUR ZUCCHINI
    1 lb small zucchini
    3T olive oil
    2 cloves garlic, crushed
    Juice of 1 lemon
    2 tsp soft brown sugar
    3 T chopped almonds
    1/4 c. Raisins
    Salt and pepper, freshly ground
    Lemon slices, to garnish

Trim zucchini and cut into long thin slices or ribbons using peeler or mandolin
Heat the oil, then Add garlic using low heat (don't burn it)
Add ZUCS till coated in oil, then add rest of ingred.
Simmer 5-10 min. If too much liquid, allow to evaporate.
    Garnish with lemon slices.

Mary Joe: I have just sent the address for the third time. Please confirm that you have received it.

    December 14, 2013

    • mjp

Yes, thank you. I don't know why I hadn't received it before. See you tonight.

One of the people bringing wine tonight just cancelled. If you can bring some wine, please do.

    Hi Marilyn,
I will be unable to attend your potluck tonight. I woke up with a bad cold and don't want to spread my germs to anyone else. I hope your gathering will be a great success.

Joe: It will be easier if you bring the chicken already sliced.

    December 13, 2013

    • Joe S.

Yes, I know. But where do you get sliced chicken? Maybe I should slice it at home and then bring it.

      December 14, 2013

  • Marilyn Z.

Mary Joe: Please bring a dessert, wine or a vegetable. See you tomorrow.

Elizabeth: An appetizer would be perfect.

    December 10, 2013

    • Joe S.

Hi! I went to Lucky's to find sliced chicken. They only have chicken parts and whole chickens. Would it be ok to bring whole chickens and then slice them up once I am at your home?

  • Sheila

    Hello everyone,

I sent a message in mid-November to the effect that I had accidentally double-booked myself for 12/14 and would no longer be able to join you. But I did not officially change my RSVP, so I have been appearing as a "Yes" on the attendance list...which I've now fixed.

I am sorry to miss meeting you all, but hope to be able to join you on some future occasion. Have fun!

Has the location been announced yet?

    December 11, 2013

Thanks, Marilyn.....I will try! The problem is the class I am taking
that ends unpredictably (sometimes 6, sometimes 7) then fighting
the holiday traffic to get from Berkeley to San Carlos....the spirit is willing.....we will see!

    December 10, 2013

  • Marilyn Z.

Kathy: Please come even if you are a little late. Bring two bottles of wine.
Sue: Please also bring two bottles of wine.
We need two reds and two whites. Perhaps you can each bring one of each.

No time to cook for I will be across the bridge at another event earlier in the day Can I bring dessert - appetizer or veggie tray?

    December 10, 2013

  • kathy

as I mentioned earlier, I will be in Berkeley until 7pm or 7:30 pm.
If I can't be there till 7:30 or so, should I still come? I could bring
a couple of bottles of wine.....shouldn't commit to food since I would get there late?

OMG ... I thought the potluck was on the 7th ... it's on the 14th. So I thought I missed it. It's on my calendar and need to know where to show up.

    Thank you,

    Joe

The potluck dinner will be in San Carlos. I will be sending the address to those attending later this week.

  • Joe S.

    Where is the meeting??

    December 7, 2013

  • Marilyn Z.

    Hi Joe:
A white elephant is something you own but haven't used and don't plan to. Perhaps it's a gift you received for which you have no use. Typically it is not of high value.
I've put your name next to a chicken dish.
    See you on the 14th.

Hi Marilyn, Where is the meeting. Please let me know if you want me to come. Thank you Joe

      December 7, 2013

  • Marilyn Z.

Joe: If you bring a chicken, it should be sliced so people can serve themselves.
Sue: I think holiday casual will be fine.

    December 6, 2013

  • Sue L.

    Hi Marllyn,
Is this a dressy event or should we just dress Christmas casual?

    December 4, 2013

  • Audrey

    OK - I'll bring a vege dish.

    December 4, 2013

  • Susan

    I'll bring a green salad.

    December 4, 2013

  • Joe S.

I was thinking of bringing a chicken ... not a "chicken dish". Is that ok? Joe

    December 4, 2013

  • Marilyn Z.

    Hi Audrey:
We still need a salad. The only vegetable we have so far is a zucchini entree. One of these would be helpful.
    Marilyn

    December 3, 2013

  • Audrey

I thought I'd bring a chicken dish too. Can we use two? If not, then I could bring a vege instead.

    Audrey

What does this mean?? Dig a white elephant out of your closet, wrap it and bring it to exchange. Unused items only please.
Also, it seems like if I bring a chicken, it will fit in well. Please advise.

    Hi Marilyn,
I am still planning on coming. I will bring the 4+ bottles of wine. Also will bring a small salad. Someone else should bring another one.
Can you please send me the address where it is being held? Is this going to be in San Carlos? Thanks.

  • Marilyn Z.

To Everyone Coming to the Potluck Dinner: At the moment we will be 11 people. Beverly is bringing a ground beef casserole. We need a chicken or turkey entree, a vegetarian entree, a salad for 11, dessert for 11 and four bottles of wine (this could be 4 people each bringing a good bottle, 2 reds and 2 whites). I am providing all soft drinks, coffee and tea. As you let me know what you are bringing, I will let you know if that item has already been taken.
Don't forget a wrapped white elephant.

Sounds like a good time...I've put it on my calendar! I may not yet have met anyone in this group by then -- I can't make it to activities on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings -- but I hope that will still be okay....

    November 6, 2013

    • Sheila

I accidentally double-booked myself for December 14th, and since the other event is a must-do, I'll have to pass on this on. I hope to have an opportunity to meet you lovely folks at another event soon!

      November 19, 2013

  • Beverly

Marilyn, I just reread your line about "determining who's bringing what." I plan to bring a spicey ground beef casserole. So please count on me for that. Thanks. I am looking forward to the occasion.

  • kathy

I wish they had yes, no and maybe.....I'd like to come but am at an
all day program I am obligated to attend in berkeley and sometimes we get finished at 5:30 and sometimes not till 6:30 so getting to San Carlos from there will be a stretch. Please keep me posted! Thanks....

I "ditto" Sue's comments! And, hooray for people who recycle gifts (ie., use "white elephants" for holiday -- or any day -- exchanges!)!!

This sounds like fun and a perfect way to meet new people in a comfortable setting. I look forwarde to this event.
