Needs a date Coming soon!
Current weather forecast is for 50% chance of precipitation w/ a high Saturday of 34 and a low of 26. If it's cloudy/raining and we decide we want the opportunity to see the moonlight, we can always go higher up (timberline) or further over (white river canyon). Those are also easy, so no worries.
Well, you guys talked me in to it. Such a great response, I've been convinced to do this on consecutive nights. This is the SECOND night of snowshoeing by the full moon. Please sign up for -either- Friday Night or Sat. Night, but not both so more people can have the chance to experience this unique look at mom nature. Thanks.
Come prepared with all your gear, as we won't be stopping to rent snowshoes on the way to the lake. Mainly, of course because all the stores will be closed... ;-)
Can you walk and chew gum? Can you pat your head and rub your stomach? Then you can snowshoe. Yeah, it's really that easy. Just walk a little bow-legged and you're golden!!
You can choose whether to snowshoe or snow walk when we get to the trailhead. If there's been recent snowfall, then we'll strap on the "shoes." If it's hard packed, folks can choose to walk the loop instead. (Easier and faster to walk on hard pack than it is to snowshoe.)
4-5 miles RT with gentle up and down elevation.
Trip Rating: Easy While not a speed hike nor a particularly strenuous trail, participants should be fit enough to hike continuously for the entire loop (there will be snack/rest breaks/picture taking, of course).
1.) Everyone must sign up on their own. If you want to bring someone, they need to sign up for this meetup individually. Hey, we've got over 2,000 members; we need a little structure.
2.) You MUST say yes to BOTH the liability waiver and RSVP policy BEFORE you can sign up on an event. Yeah, really. I'll have to delete you if you!!!!!!!!! haven't done that... Info. on how to do that is at the bottom of this description.
3.) We'll carpool from the meeting point or you can drive yourself. Bring some cash for the driver you carpool with. Recommended donation is $10 per person. This is in appreciation for their time driving the 105 miles RT, use of the vehicle, gas, etc. If you're meeting us at the trailhead, please let me know in your RSVP so we're not looking for you at Gateway.
What to bring:
Headlamp/flashlight and extra batteries. Headlamps work MUCH better than flashlights. Sure it's going to be a full moon, but what if it goes behind a cloud or you need to adjust your snowshoes? I'll pick up some new inexpensive headlamps for $5 and have them available for you to buy. They're nothin' special, but they work fine and are kinda nice to have around the house or on car camps, etc. Bring 2 AA and 2 AAA batteries (depending on which headlamp you decide on).
trail shoes or boots. We'll be in snow (hopefully nice, deep snow), so the higher your boots, the less snow gets in 'em. Gaiters are a good idea, too.
Water (about 1-2 quarts),
snackage/dinner and maybe some treats for you and your fellow hikers.
Your own personal First aid kit
Unless you like frozen buns, bring something insulated to sit on during stops if you sit down.
Clothing appropriate for a cold, snowy and exposed environment. Please, no cotton, no cotton, no freakin' cotton! 3 layers of clothes recommended.
Hat, gloves, neck gaiter, etc., etc., etc. You know the drill.
A dry change of clothes to leave in the car for the ride home. Might want to bring extra socks, comfy shoes, and a fresh top for the ride home -whew!
As always in Oregon, dress for those 'variable weather conditions'. It sucks being too cold, hot, wet... Go ahead, ask me how I know.... ;-))
There will be about 25 people on this hike, so let's be organized so we can keep things flowing.
Drivers: Sno-Park AND traction devices (Sno-Park parking permits are required) and need to be bought before driving up to the mountain.)
Oh, and just a couple more things; ya gotta sign the waiver -and- agree to the RSVP policy....
All members must read and accept the Liability Waiver-Assume Risk-Indemnify- Club Rules policy (click on "pages" to locate and read the policies). To get to your personal page for this group (click on the "members" tab, then on your profile) if you haven't agreed to them, click on 'edit' and change the answers to yes. Hey, Joanne's a slave driver!! Ever seen her mad? Uff Da!!
See you on the 19th
Keith
