We will be carrying any and all trees we have gathered for our planting festivities on May 12th to Thurman, IA (about 35 miles south of Council Bluffs)! We will have a canopy set up, some can help plant trees if needed, some can hand out water and snacks, some can just help direct people, lots to do!There may be media there, so wear your 912 shirts! We still have many sizes available if you would like one! We have a little over 50 trees at this point and would love to be able to replace the 157 trees that were destroyed and the many more that were damaged! Please share this with your friends, neighbors, church groups and families; donations are needed and greatly appreciated!
As we all are aware, the recent rash of tornadoes swept through the Iowa town of Thurman. As officials and volunteers clear debris and clear the way for clean-up and rebuilding, the town of Thurman which has made it through the massive floods and now tornado is truly an inspiring example of resilience. While meeting with the Mayor and County Supervisors, we asked what we could help with once the initial wave of clean up volunteers subsided. The one thing that stuck with us was something Mayor Rod Umphries mentioned;
Though the real work of rebuilding will start after clean-up, the folks of Thurman will be left with a relatively barren landscape compared to the beauty, shade and comfort of the many old trees that helped shape the character of Thurman.
We hope with your help, to have a small part in a fresh new start for the resilient and inspiring town of Thurman. We hope to have a tree planting trip to Thurman the weekend of May 12th with as many trees and 912 Project volunteers as possible!
You can be assured that 100% of all contributions will go towards getting new trees in the ground in Thurman. Special thanks to Mark Shoemaker of Pott. County Conservation and Lindsey Barney-District Forester!
Thanks go out to those that have contributed already, including Anita who went to her Adult Church Group and gathered $200 for trees! Others are gathering trees from their property; some are volunteering pick up trucks and time! Our goal is 157 six foot trees and as many saplings and shrubs as we can carry and plant! Please consider helping head up an effort to make this a success for everyone!
People helping people is the core of the 912 Project and we hope to turn an unfortunate random disaster into some heart felt inspiration for others!
