Prompted by an email from Joni from Mercury One, a couple of us from 912 Western Iowa went to Thurman on Monday to meet with the Mayor and County Supervisors down there.
The town was full of volunteers and debris removal crews and we asked what would be likely needed after the initial wave of volunteers subsided and the real work of rebuilding began. The one thing the Mayor said that surprised and stuck with me was, "trees". Yes, they will need building materials, rakes and cleaning supplies, but they will be left with a barren landscape. Most of the town's old shade and other trees are now nothing but stumps and splintered lumber.
We decided to focus our attention on remedying that. With the help of all of the local nurseries, churches, and grass roots groups, our goal is to get Trees To Thurman. Though there have been hundreds of volunteers over the past few days and donations from Home Depot, and Wal-Mart were significant (Even Offutt Air Force Base sent a handful of airmen to help in the clean-up) the end of the clean up phase will see those volunteers wane.
Still, the resilience of Thurman is amazing considering the flood we just went through and these tornados; it really is inspiring.
We are putting together a drive to remedy the now barren landscape, and hope to have a small part in a fresh new start for Thurman. Tentatively , the first week of May we would like to deliver some fresh roots. We will be asking the nurseries to pledge a tree or two, or at least afford us some discounted trees. We have the broad strokes set up and are filling in details. If you have any ideas or would like to help, please respond. The picture below is a link for making donations.
