Critique and Discussion Meeting

The purpose of the group will be to assist fellow writers with there immediate, short term writing goals with greater intensity. Along with critiques, the idea would be to help inspire each other creatively, and to motivate positive action toward publication.

Please plan on bringing a short piece to read, but if you don't have anything or are uncomfortable in the beginning, you are more than welcome to come and participate in the discussion.

Hey Brian, sorry I couldn't make it the past two weeks - end of the year kid concerts :) I did do some research on markets - that's another area we might share some night. I think I have three conflicting events this Thursday (shock! after all those months of nothing on that night!) so looking forward to catching up again after Mem Day weekend.

Tonight, we welcomed Stacie Dunn to our newly formed writers group. Again, we took a little time to get to know one another, and then we talked about our individual projects and where we see ourselves taking them. Although we each brought writing samples, this group's efforts were in defining a precise goal to accomplish before the next week's meeting. What made it especially inspiring, was the opportunity to share creative ideas between each other, and the valuable gain of another's perspective. We also took time to go over the publishing process, methods for getting published, and personal experiences with getting published. Next week, we'll review our writing progress, discuss it, encourage the next step forward, and set further goals. Oh, yeah, and enjoy our time together around like-minded people. Thank you to all who showed up tonight!

Last week, we discussed a short writing assignment to get our legs beneath us. Tonight, I would like to see those that can, bring a short sample of their writing whether they did the assignment or not. I would also like to start discussing our individual projects creatively and in more detail. Can't wait to see everyone!

We had a great conversation, which included introductions, and individual Q&A regarding writing interests, current projects, and short and long term goals. There was a variety of writer skill levels and experience, both published and unpublished. We also discussed briefly writing barriers that may have prevented positive steps forward toward their goals. The remainder of the meeting was spent getting to know each other, and then setting a minor writing assignment. Group meetings are weekly, same place and time.

No one has to worry about bringing their writing tomorrow, unless you want to. The plan is to get to know each other, and discuss our goals and projects. If the group is interested, we may set weekly goals, either writing warm-up exercises, or working on specific projects. I would like for everyone to be comfortable with sharing and speaking their mind.

It's starting to sound like Thursday is a good day for everyone so far. I would like to hold it in a public coffee shop between 6 and 6:30, with plans to last about two hours. I will post an exact date, time, and place after I hear feedback.
