Saturday Critique Meeting

Hi Everyone, please join us for our weekly critique meeting. We are holding this every Saturday afternoon at Vie de Boheme Winery (which is open to all ages). They have a great back room that can be closed off from the rest of the restaurant so it's an ideal place for reading aloud.

We are using a read-aloud format. If you wish to have your work critiqued, please bring a short piece or chapter (about 2-3 double-spaced pages) to read out loud to the group. It can be any genre, including non-fiction or poetry, but we do ask that the material be PG-13 as we are in a public place and don't put age restrictions on our writers. You don't have to read - you can show up to listen and critique or just listen. We don't have set time limits on critiques - all we ask is that you be mindful of how many readers are reading after you so that everyone gets a chance to read. We don't charge for the meetings, but we do ask that everyone buy something to support the venue so they let us come back. :)

Please RSVP so we have an accurate count to give the restaurant.

I apologize for arriving late and leaving early. I'm just now moving to Portland and looking for housing and work. I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting and was impressed by the quality of work and comments presented. I'm eager to be able to join in (when I get my life better organized). Anyone need a technical writer?

The meetup was great as usual. I enjoyed the variety of subject matter.

The the feedback I received regarding my my friend's story was welcome. I'm still new dealing with guest writers on my web-site. Having a published author for a guest writer is one matter but an "off the top of the head narration" from my friend presents some new hurdles as I'm finding out. I want to limit passive voice as much as I can manage while letting my friend's "voice" come through clearly.

I can understand how this presents a dilemma for the critique givers as well. "Who am I actually critiquing?", would certainly be a question I would have if I were listening.

Since Jack and I will be working on three stories in chronological order, I believe I'll skip next Saurday's meeting. I have a clear idea where we are going now with these stories so I think I'll spare the gang from two more of these.

Hopefully by the 22nd, I'll be back to my own writing. Thanks to all for your indulgence.

    Fred...

Loved the fresh material of Vietnam story. Please accentuate the insanity.

When Jack and the other crew members were given orders to rendezvous with a moving freighter at night they would have questioned the sanity of such a mission if they had not been in such a hurry to get their boat ready. With calm reflection the folly of the plan would have become obvious. Later when the French freighter nearly ran them over in the night, the true insanity of the plan become obvious. The whole plan was doomed from the start. This will be the first of three stories about my friends eyewitness account of the Cambodian Incursion. Thanks for the input , Robert.

How many times before has this site been attacked?

Just in case I wasn't sufficiently clear in the passage I read last Saturday about an another attack (with regard to this attack), this is the kind of thing that the cult I'm writing about has done before and probably still does. It's real, believe me.

I threw my back out yesterday before I was done using it. Do not think I can sit for two hours. Apologies as I want to be there and feel I have missed too many meetings lately. See you all next week.

New to this meetup, and can't attend, due to a conflict with another writing workshop. But, looking forward to next Saturday's meetup! ;)
