John Dobson's 98th Birthday Celebration

Never too soon to plan for:
JOHN DOBSON'S 98th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

We'll be celebrating John's birthday with a day long event at Griffith Observatory on Wednesday, September 18th.

In true sidewalk fashion, we'll construct a 12" telescope to use for observing the Moon that evening as part of the International Observe the Moon celebration.

We encourage a hands-on grinding for the public and any amateurs who want to get a work out. We'll also be assembling the mount so that everyone can see the entire telescope building process for themselves.

More information to come as we work out the details. Maybe we'll caravan down to LA.

John Dobson came to our school (Lucas Valley Elementary School in Marin County) when I was 11 or 12 (1972 or 73). I was so excited by his lecture, I invited him to dinner, which he accepted. I told my recently emigrated Swedish mother that I was bringing a man from school home, and that he was a vegetarian. She didn't know what to make of this, but proceeded to cook Greek eggplant, and we all had a great time. I'm still a major astronomical lover, and hope to get a Phd in exoplantetary astronomy some day. John helped cement my passion for astronomy!
