What: Slide and Equipment Night
When: Saturday, 19 October 2013, 7:30PM
Who: SJAA and all members of the local amateur community
Where: Houge Park
Why: We Make (read on)
Astronomy sits at a crossroads between many disciplines, such as other sciences, humanities, history and arguably anything else. Pick a topic and you won't struggle to draw a line from it to astronomy.
The SJAA acknowledges something else that overlays quite well with our favored past time: Making. We astronomers are makers. We are makers when we build telescopes and grind mirrors. We are makers when we sketch what we see at the eyepiece, document the astronomy related parts of a recent trip, or work tirelessly to ignite that spark of interest in a young person's imagination. We make.
The SJAA celebrates the maker's spirit later this month at its annual Slide and Equipment night. Essentially a show and tell session, this long standing event allows the amateur astronomy community to showcase the projects it's been working on.
You are invited to come to Houge Park on October 19 and show off what you've been up to. Nearly anything is acceptable, from mounting hacks and HowTo's on anodizing your aluminum, to an astronomy related song (performances welcome!). If you had a great trip, bring your best pictures, we'll splash them up on the screen and you can tell about your experience.
No registration is needed, just show up. But there are guidelines, like this:
- let's try to fit everyone in; limit the demo/talk to 10 - 15 minutes.
- if you need special accommodations, let me know (see below). Generally, we can supply 110VAC, and a WinTel laptop that should be able to read your USB stick with a PDF.
- big gear is welcome but it has to fit through a single doorway; come early if you have to unload it from your vehicle (this reduces distractions).
If there's anything else you need to know about, give me a shout (email's best: rob dot jaworski at sjaa not net).
Looking forward to another great Slide and Equipment night!
