“A good [short story] would take me out of myself and then stuff me back in, outsized, now, and uneasy with the fit.” ― David Sedaris Let the poets have their sonnets and the memoirists their "creative" non-fiction. This is a group for readers, writers and lovers of short stories. Over the next six months, we will take an in-depth look at the short story; evaluating elements such as plot, characterization, point-of-view, conflict. And of course, we'll read and discuss stories, including both the classics and contemporary examples. Least this seem too scholarly, we'll meet once a month at some place fun for our discussions. I'm thinking brunch places, neighborhood bars, coffee shops, pumpkin patches, bawdy houses. (OK, maybe not the last two.) And so this group doesn't become my own little fiefdom, each month a different member will be responsible for "hosting." The host for the month will select where we'll meet, lead the discussion and email out resources on the element we're discussing at the beginning of the month. In lieu of a financial contribution at each Meetup, each member is required to bring 7 copies of a short story that is a particularly succinct example of the subject we’re covering the next month. And so we’re a tight knitted group (and mainly because anything larger starts feeling a little like a class), I’m capping the group at 8 members. Ok, I think that’s the basics. Email if you’re interested and you’ll get more details.
