There's a potential for rattlesnakes on ANY hiking trail in Southern California. I've never seen one in the Chantry Flat area but I have seen one in Griffith Park, for example. The Sturtevant hike is my favorite one in Southern California so you'll be missing out on a great hike on the remote chance you'll see a rattlesnake. And even if you do, like most wildlife, they're more afraid of you than you are of them. If you just calmly walk around them, you'll be fine.
